Computer Science & IT Concept Discussions

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 07:23 AM PST

CEans,

It always helps to have the 'basic concepts' in your engineering discipline 'clear' in your mind. Why not pick up topics from your text books and start new discussion threads for each new topic? It would help all CEans in following ways -

1. Understand the concept well.
2. Get problems/doubts cleared from experts in those topics.
3. Perform well in exams, interviews
4. Increase general awareness about computer science, tech & IT engineering.

PS: It's important that you start a new thread with title as the topic and then briefly discuss your understanding of the topic. Remember - you can be right or wrong. The aim is to get doubts cleared for yourself and others as well.

Don't be embarrassed to discuss the topic that you don't understand at all. That's the way, all of us will do group-study here on CE :)

Top Reasons For Hard Disk Failure

Posted: 30 Jan 2011 07:26 PM PST

Ever since personal computers were invented, I believe the most common problem all users have faced is 'Hard Disk Crash'. I thought of compiling the top reasons why a hard disk may fail. Here are few that came to my mind -

1. Physical Damage: When you carry your HDD with you, the R/W arm may get dislocated.
2. File System Corruption: Not sure why this happens though.
3. Malware / Virus related damage.

I request all our talented CS/IT engineers to extend this list along with the reasons and also contribute the recovery solutions.

Paypal Impact On Indian Freelancers

Posted: 29 Jan 2011 10:09 PM PST

There are many freelancers in India who earn descent income via Paypal - the top way to transfer money online. However, RBI has imposed new guidelines that will now make Paypal close to useless for users in India. Read about it here : http://www.crazyengineers.com/forum/...march-1-a.html

Those who're not aware of the issue, let me tell you what exactly has happened and why RBI did the changes to the policy -

If you're a freelancer from India and you got paid $250 for your services from your client in Europe. Now, you could simply keep the money in your paypal account and use if for your online transactions OR withdraw that money to your bank account OR use it to make purchases online. In such a case, Indian Tax Authorities will have no way to find out how much you earned and how much to tax you.

With the new guidelines you -

1. Should withdraw that money to your bank account within 7 days of receipt.
2. Should not get any inward remittance exceeding $500
3. You will not be able to use money in your Papal account to buy any goods online - if you must use PayPal - you will have to use your bank's credit card to transfer the money to Paypal.

All this ... to make it easier for RBI to keep track of your payments and tax you accordingly.

This is going to impact the freelancers in a big way. There are many startups that offer services and get paid primarily through PayPal. There are paypal alternatives available at present however it's just a matter of time that RBI will impose similar restrictions on them as well.

Are you a freelancer, startup affected? We'd like to know your views.

India Against Corruption march from Ramlila to Jantar Mantar

Posted: 29 Jan 2011 05:21 AM PST

India Against Corruption
Had the Rs. 176,700 crores not been squandered in the 2G Scam, our country would now have enough revenue to wipe out half the fiscal deficit of our country, to improve the rural and urban economy of our country! Despite public outcry, no worthwhile investigations are going on. This is because of several systemic deficiencies in our anti-corruption systems. Institutions that have the freedom to act do not have the power to do so, while institutions, which have the power to act, do not have the freedom to do so.

India Against Corruption is a campaign, which is not aligned to or against any political party. We feel that every political party has misused its position whenever they have been in power or otherwise. Therefore, it is extremely important that the citizens of this country unite to demand systemic changes.

India Against Corruption is a movement of several concerned citizens of India who have come together (many more are joining in) to demand comprehensive reforms of anti-corruption systems in India. Art of Living & WAYE are supporting the movement to make the public aware of the menace and how the Lokpal bill can change the face of the nation, if it is passed in its totality.

What are we doing?
On 30th Jan, 2011, on the occasion of Martyrdom Day, there will be a march from the Ramlila Ground to Jantar Mantar demanding enactment of a law to set up an effective anti-corruption body called the Lokpal at the Centre and the Lokayukta in each State. Thousands of people will take to streets to demand effective anti-corruption law.

What can you do?
Spread the word. Talk to your friends and colleagues about this. Join us and express your solidarity to the nation. This is a citizens' initiative and therefore requires every individual's wholehearted support.

Want to know more about it?
Join us at IIT for a panel discussion on India Against Corruption, being addressed by Mr. Arvind Kejriwal and Dr. Kiran Bedi themselves, on 27th Jan 2011 at Dogra Hall, 5pm onwards.

For more information, please feel free to get in touch with Garima Narang at 9810508745 or write to alliances@wayeonline.org or visit: www.indiaagainstcorruption.org

I've recently got into doing small electronic work. Ive got some soldering experience and have done work with LEDS, resistors, capacitors, and transistors. Anyways, I would like to do a project with a microcontroller, a servo, sensor as well as some LEDS. However, there are so many different kinds of microcontrollers and i know basically nothing about them. I did some searching on the web and read some articles but its still clear as mud. Im hoping to keep things cheap and relatively simple as this is a simple project. any feedback is appreciated.
