VLSI Problem - Need Solution

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 10:54 AM PDT

Design a CMOS inverter chain as a clock buffer which drives the first stage of clock tree with equivalent interconnect parasitic capacitance of 1nF. The input gate capacitance of the inverter is 50fF. Device model parameter and unit equivalent resistance (average equivalent resistance may be used) can be found in the unified model. The unit capacitance is 15fF and gamma(r) = 1.

(1) Find the number of stages required when the effective fan-out are e, 4 and 6,respectively. Calculate the corresponding inverter chain delay.

(2) Which case in (1) gives the lowest path delay? Estimate the W of the last inverter in the chain (L=0.25mm). Assume that the first inverter has device sizesof W/L=2 for PMOS and W/L=1 for NMOS.

(3) Estimate the total dynamic power dissipation if the clock frequency is 1GHz and VDD = 2.5V

P.S. I need the solution for part (b).. Getting absurd result.. Tried everywhere on my own... Finally to CE :)

Cheers,
Prakash

LED TV Vs. LCD TV - Which one's better?

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 08:30 AM PDT

Obviously, the choice depends on personal taste; however, I need information on difference between LED TV & LCD TVs.

From what I've gathered by reading few articles on the Internet LED TVs only add backlight to the LCD screen and make the screen appear brighter.

Is that the only difference? Has anyone had hands on with LED & LCD TVs?

Are IT industry jobs loosing its glitter?

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 04:49 AM PDT

I read in newspaper that,
Software companies are finding that a rising number of engineering and management graduates are transferring their affections to vocations such as manufacturing and banking - a shift that could force tech firms to scramble harder than ever before for talented employees.

Is it because of the perceived job security in the core sector and rising salary levels in manufacturing and telecom companies?

Some say, its because IT companies are now visiting college campuses for recruitment only during the eighth semester of the course, giving an opportunity to firms from other sectors to attract the best talent before them.

What do you think may be the reasons for this?

NAIST announces i3Space technology - Review

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 04:43 AM PDT

Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) just announced this new technology that they have been working on. Dubbed i3Space, this will allow people to experience 3D on their television sets in a way they have never done so before.

Six motion-detector cameras are used to monitor the viewer's fingers and tiny clips attached to their index fingers vibrate when they 'touch' an image.

A spokesman said: "This system recognises the user's behaviour and offers tactile feedback and the illusion of using the tactile sense of force. It is the first time you can feel images in the air."

The team believes i3Space could be useful for surgeons to practise techniques before an operation and also has great potential in gaming. Perhaps one day it could even make a Star Trek-style 'holodeck' a reality.

Just imagine how awesome your gaming experience will be if i3Space were supported by your favorite gaming platform? :)

iPhone App that may replace a stethoscope

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 04:36 AM PDT

Peter Bentley invented the 'iStethoscope' application which monitors heartbeat through sensors in the iPhone as just a bit of fun. And, more than three million doctors across the world are signing up for the free application.

"Everybody is very excited about the potential of the adoption of mobile phone technology into the medical workplace, and rightly so. Smartphones are incredibly powerful devices packed full of sensors, cameras, high-quality microphones with amazing displays.

"They are capable of saving lives, saving money and improving healthcare in a dramatic fashion, and we carry these massively powerful computers in our pockets," the British media quoted Bentley as saying.

While he said that he had originally invented it as a fun toy, experts in the medical field have said the software is a major advance in medical technology which has saved lives and enabled doctors in remote areas to access expertise.

In fact, in the future, it could be possible for people to conduct their own ultrasounds or monitor blood pressure through smartphones, say the experts.

HP and Dell trying to seek 3Par

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 04:31 AM PDT

Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc are both trying to buy data-storage provider 3 Par Inc.

A little information about 3Par:

3Par makes and sells storage utilities, or groups of specialized computers designed to store data that are frequently updated. The company has technology for what's known as thin provisioning, the ability to dole out only as much storage space as necessary at any given moment, with the ability to quickly scale up or down depending on the conditions.

With cloud-based storage services, Dell or HP would operate the storage machines on behalf of their customers. The thin provisioning from 3Par would help Dell or HP use expensive storage hardware more efficiently by sharing it among multiple customers.

The company sells its products to Web companies including Ask.com, IAC, MySpace.com, Priceline.com, US Census Bureau, Credit Suisse and Verizon Business.

3Par also announced an intention to terminate its merger agreement with Dell. However, a Dell spokesman said that Dell has the right to match HP's offer for three business days and is weighing its options.
