Credit Card Processing

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 11:04 AM PST

There is a ton of extra literature the high school senior receives in the mail during their twelfth grade year. There are special scholarship offers, student financing, and special college programs, not to mention the number of invitations from Uncle Sam to come join the Navy, Marines, and Army. Having just been through this, I can add to that, at least fifty offers for a student credit card.
Now, no offense to these hard working people and their advertising campaigns, not to mention the U.S. Postal Service who delivered these documents; but, the majority of these offers ended up in the round file, aka as the trash, unopened. There is just too much, too fast, and you're busy with other things, like just getting through those last few months of school.
As a parent of a recent college graduate and another one coming up, I realize it is important that the college student have a credit card. Now that all of the excitement of final exams and graduation is over, it's time to start looking forward to the next step. With the new college year just around the corner, it's time to look at and compare those college student credit cards offers.
That is what is so great about the internet. You can enter college student credit card into any search engine and come up with a number of sites that give you a choice right here online. You don't even have to leave the comfort of your own home. You can shop right here and even sign up and order your card any time day or night. No need to take a trip to the post office to mail your application, you just press enter.

Series and parallel circuits

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 09:30 AM PST

Why is that in a circuit made of series connection of capacitors the total capacitance of capacitors in series is equal to the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals of their individual capacitances?

why cant it be sum of their individual capacitance as in case of resistors and inductors?

Plz explain this contrary in terms of Parallel circuits too....

Magma’s FineSim Deployed by Toshiba Corporation for Advanced Flash Memory Sign-off Si

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 07:21 AM PST

SAN JOSE, Calif. and YOKOHAMA, Japan, Nov. 30, 2010 — Magma® Design Automation Inc. (Nasdaq: LAVA), a provider of chip design software, announced today that Toshiba Corporation, a leading provider of flash memory products, has deployed the FineSim™ platform for sign-off simulation. Toshiba uses FineSim Pro with the native multi-CPU technology for its NAND flash memory development.

"Toshiba's flash products, featuring leading-edge technology and functionality, are highly differentiated and used in wide variety of applications," said Masaki Momodomi, Memory Technology Executive of Toshiba Corporation's Semiconductor Company. "This makes it imperative that we are first to market with highly reliable products. Magma's unified circuit simulation platform increases our overall design productivity by allowing us to make intelligent tradeoffs between performance and accuracy within a single tool."

"Toshiba's decision to use FineSim as its primary circuit simulation solution demonstrates the value of Magma's unified multi-CPU simulation platform," said AnirudhDevgan, general manager of Magma's Custom Design Business Unit. "With the performance improvement provided by FineSim leading semiconductor providers such as Toshiba can reduce design and manufacturing costs while meeting critical time-to-market goals."

FineSim SPICE: Simulating Advanced Circuits
FineSim SPICE is a SPICE-level simulation analysis tool that incorporates transistor-level simulation analysis capabilities for mixed-digital and analog designs. In addition, FineSim SPICE supports distributed processing over multiple CPUs or machines, enabling simulation of large-scale mixed-signal designs. By providing increased speed and capacity while maintaining full-SPICE accuracy, FineSim SPICE enables designers to simulate advanced circuits – such as PLLs, ADCs (analog-to-digital converters), DACs (digital-to-analog converters) and gigahertz SERDES (SERializers/DESerializers) – that they previously would not even attempt using slower traditional SPICE simulators.

FineSim Pro: First to Offer Multi-CPU Support
FineSim Pro is the industry's first fast SPICE circuit simulator that supports multi-CPU simulations. It is the only simulator that performs true multi-CPU SPICE analysis. This allows for the most accurate results with the best possible throughput. FineSim Pro verifies a range of designs from large memories to large complex analog ICs, which previously could not be practically verified in transient circuit simulators. FineSim Pro also has a separate option for IR drop and electromigration analysis.

ge.tt Simple File Sharing Service Review

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 05:20 AM PST

File sharing can be painful. There are tons of services out there but they are cluttered with unwanted stuff. There's a new service, called 'ge.tt' (ge.tt ) that's aiming to be different, better and simpler.

All you have to do is go to ge.tt and upload the file of any size that you wish to share. Once uploaded, you'll be presented with a short URL of your file, which you can share with anyone.

The receiver of the URL will simply have to visit the URL and download the file. The shared file remains on the GE.TT servers for 30 days.

I love the simplicity of the service!

Ask Questions To Er. Mark Chapman - Chief Engineer Project Bloodhound SSC

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 04:21 AM PST

CEans,

Here's one more, ONCE IN LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY brought to you by CrazyEngineers!

Ask questions to the Mr. Mark Chapman - The Chief Engineer of Project Bloodhound SSC (super sonic car) that's building World's F-A-S-T-E-------S-T CAR with top speed of 1000 miles/hour [1600 kilometers per hour].

Post questions in following thread: Ask Questions To Mark Chapman

About the project: -

Mr. Mark Chapman
The primary objective of the Project is to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in science, engineering, technology and maths - by demonstrating how they can be harnessed to achieve the seemingly impossible, such as the BLOODHOUND 1,000 mph land speed record . Because the FIA World Land Speed Record rules are minimal, the challenger cars tend to be very different and therefore because the technology is unlikely to be of value to a competitor, there is no need to be secretive about the technology. So it can (and will) all be made available on the web – just as it happens. This is unique: the Defence, Motor Race and Space industries are unable to share their technology in this way.

Cloud Computing

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 03:35 AM PST

Hi CEans,

The term cloud computing has become one of the hottest talked about topic.
Technology is growing fast.It all began with the concept of distributed computing.
We had cluster computing, then we had grid computing and now we have moved on to cloud. Ultimate objective was to increase the computing power thereby perform voluminous tasks within a shorter interval of time.

In simpler terms, cloud is all about getting anything anywhere (internet service)..Clouds promote the concept of leasing remote resources rather than buying own hardware.Hardware, software and even the entire infrastructure could be provided as a service on a cloud.

Clouds eliminate the physical overhead cost of adding new hardware such as compute nodes to clusters or supercomputers and the financial burden of permanent over-provisioning of occasionally needed resources.

The main reason for we being moved from grid to cloud is that resources are unreliable in a grid.We have to perform the task of maintaining those resources, adjust with the dynamism exihibited by them.

Virtualization is another closely related concept to this cloud computing. We have various corporates like amazon and google providing us with cloud services.

I just request all ceans to share their views on this topic. Even posting a basic definition regarding this would help all of us in learning this new upcoming technology.

Final Year project based on Stepper Motor and Sensors

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 10:10 PM PST

Hi CE peeps..:)
I am a final yr student in ECE and i was searching for some projects based on Stepper Motor and Sensors, something that involves movement after sensing something. So the first idea that came to our (me and my project mates) minds was an automated Mic. controller that adjusts the position of mic. automatically using Stepper motor after sensing the height of the speaker (position of lips). So the problem involved was the use of Digital image processing (DIP) to identify the face/lips of the speaker and moving the mic. to a position for better reception since we had little or no knowledge about digital image processing, and to add on to the misery, another classmate of ours who studied DIP as an elective subject also decided to do the same project. So the only option for us is to leave this topic and select another one:(. Since we started off with an idea like this, it is hard for us to let it go. So what i need is a project that uses Stepper Motor and some sensors to perform some useful operation. It would really appreciate if some one could help me out with suggestions of topics that involve Stepper motor motion depending on Sensor input (preferentially not using DIP). I know this is too much information but thanks a lot for any help, hope some one will reply soon.

Rugged PCs Required To Meet The UK Challenge Of Rolling Out 50m Smart Meters

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 05:40 AM PST

Centrica Uses Panasonic Toughbook To Assist With 2m Installations By 2012

UK. 29 NOVEMBER 2010: Rugged PCs will be the mobile device of choice for power companies as their field engineers' look to rollout 50 million smart meters across the UK over the next two decades. That's the verdict of IDC, leading IT analyst company, in its latest white paper on "The Role of Rugged PCs in Successful Rollouts of Smart Metering Systems".

In July this year, the UK Government's Energy Department issued a prospectus for the nationwide implementation of a smart metering program. The department is expected to make a final decision on the action plan by the end of this year.

According to the Energy and Climate Change Department, the rollout will be a major effort, involving visits to more than 27 million homes and the installation of around 50 million smart meters over the next two decades. Multi-billion pound benefits across the domestic and smaller non-domestic sectors are projected, coming in large part from reductions in energy consumption and cost savings in industry processes.

Centrica PLC, one of the largest energy providers in Europe, has already equipped its UK smart energy experts with the Panasonic Toughbook CF-H1 Field, a rugged tablet with high visibility LCD screen, dust and water endurance and water resistance. With 100,000 smart meters already installed in the UK, Centrica is on track for 2m installations by the end of 2012.

Before choosing Panasonic Toughbook, Centrica evaluated around 20 different types of mobile device, studying the battery life and screen size and clarity of the device as well as ease of use with a single hand and whilst wearing gloves. However, most crucial was the ability for the device to run a standard Windows 32-bit environment for its native built applications.

"Application flexibility requires real computers," explained IDC analyst Giorgio Nebuloni. "The need for a rich operating system, typically Windows 32-bit, and the ability to support intensive workloads such as encryption and cartography means that the PDA falls short when it comes to delivering a full experience."

IDC said the key takeaways for utility companies when buying mobile computing devices were:

- Ruggedness is a given. All companies interviewed claimed to be happy with the choice of a rugged device. Even more than that, they took the rugged form factor for granted, arguing that without it everyday operations would become virtually impossible due to failure rates.
- Connectivity. There is a full range of activities performed by field engineers that require access to the Internet or intranet, GPS, 3G, and WiFi connectivity. A connected device allows engineers to work remotely and strongly reduces the travel distances, making savings in that area too.
- Application flexibility requires real computers. All users reported the need for rich OS, typically Windows 32-bit, and the ability to support compute-intensive workloads, such as encryption and cartography. PDAs often fall short when it comes to delivering a full experience.
- The whole package is important. More than once, the product deployed was accepted and used more quickly because the device manufacturer was able to offer what seemingly were small improvements to offer a total solution for the field engineers.
- An act of balance. All utilities are looking for the perfect balance between devices with a large enough screen, enough computing punch, and portability, all without sacrificing durability. So far, compromises have had to be made in one direction or the other, but, as technology evolves, new form factors combining touch, portability, and power will help make the choice easier.

Intex IN8810 V.Show Mobile With Built In Projector Reviews And Price In India

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 04:49 AM PST

Intex is going very innovative with its range of mobile phones. The company has recently launched Intex V.Show IN 8810 - the phone with inbuilt projector! That means you can put your photos and videos for display on wall or a big screen.

The IN8810 V.Show is a touch-screen phone that expands its screen upto 36" via projector mode. The company claims that there is 3 hours of project time on battery, which I think is more than what anyone would expect. Imagine projecting a full movie on big screen using this phone! The life of the inbuilt projector lamp is said to be 20,000 hours.

The phone also has quick-charge battery, 64MB internal memory that can be extended to 16 GB via MicroSD card.

In addition, this phone has dual GSM network support which you will find in any of the latest mobile phones available in India. However, it would be interesting to know how the dual-SIM phones sales will be once the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is fully launched all over India.

The price of this phone is not correctly known. Various websites are pricing this phone between INR. 12000 - 16000.

Another silly question regarding the transmissability of power.

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 01:06 AM PST

I am back with another silly doubt of mine!:hehehe:
Suppose I have a power plant of my own. I can produce 20MW of power. But the substation near my plant has users who only consume a total of 3MW of power. Before I start up my plant, I studied the sub-station.Its a 33/11kV substation. I saw that it is initially consuming power from another substation with is a 132/33kV substation. A thought struck my mind. If I do supply the 33/11kV substation with all my power, can I be able to connect and transfer my power to the 132/33kV substation? That is, if I give 20MW to the 33/11kV substation, will it export the excess power back to the 132/33kV grid? I can't connect the power plant directly to the 132/33kV substation as it is 40km away. Laying down 40km of transmission line will make my investors really unhappy.

I require the answer for this question really fast. Please let me know about it. Thank you.
Again, sorry for taking time.

For Development part ,we have two options
1:-Use of ready made tools, which are available for easy development of these applications
2:-Create our own code for better understanding.

Now its upto you what you want

However i will prefer 2nd option because there is more fun in creating our own code :):p

Laying down 40km of transmission line will make my investors really unhappy.

I require the answer for this question really fast. Please let me know about it. Thank you.
Again, sorry for taking time.

Why transformer is a passive circuit?

Posted: 28 Nov 2010 05:44 AM PST

Can anyone help me out in explaining why transformers are considered as passive circuits. Transformers performs by stepping up/down voltage/current,changes low input power to high output and vice versa.

But these are the basic definitions of an active device.A transistor also does this. Then why is transformer called a passive device?

Plz help me fellows:rolleyes:

CE Meet Locations In West India?

Posted: 28 Nov 2010 08:18 AM PST

As I declared earlier, we are planning to make CE Offline Meets an integral part of CE. I request all our CEans from West India to provide us with a list of 3 locations most suitable to them.

Note: All our meets will be on weekends or holidays at convenient locations and time.

I look forward to your responses.

CE Meet In South India: Let's decide the city

Posted: 28 Nov 2010 08:14 AM PST

CEans,

As many of you requested, we should have offline meets where CEans can come together and interact face to face. We've decided to make CE Meets an integral part of CE community, starting January 2011. The meets will be hosted at convenient location and time.

I see there's a growing number of participants from South India and we'd love to host a meet for all of you.

I request all of you to post three cities where you can come to attend the meet. Like -

1. Chennai
2. Bangalore
3. Hyderabad

and so on. It will help us fix the best possible location to host CE Meet.
