Alternative energy generators (Solar Power)

Posted: 31 Aug 2011 06:56 AM PDT

Depleting natural resources such as coal, petroleum products, and uncontrolled deforestation for urban development, have compelled visionaries to tap solar power as a sustainable and green power source. However present technologies demand larger surface area to collect solar energy & then converting into electricity. When demand is in terms of gigawatts, surface areas will be huge and therefore concentrating solar rays in limited areas remains the solution. It was in news, that Japanese scientists are intending to install mirrors on the Moon for reflecting the solar rays to the Earth. The same purpose can be achieved if mirrors are installed on geostationary satellites. Can some authorities enlighten us?

Setting The thermostat too cold

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 06:28 AM PDT

I'm an hvacr contractor that installed a heat pump system in Massachusetts in an addition. The customer caused the system to ice up by setting the thermostat too cold. One of my techs installed a freeze protection thermostat to stop this from happening again. Now the customer is complaining he can't get the system to run any colder than 66 degrees f. I have explained to him about how the system is designed to go no lower than 70 degrees f. But this falls on deaf ears. So, I was wondering if anyone knew of any printed documentation that I could give to him that would explain it better.

Demineralised Water makeup in Boilers of Power Plant

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 08:28 AM PDT

In standard power plant, having boiler pressure > 80kg/cm² ; D.M Water is used. Generally makeup water is added in hot-well of condenser where steam condensed ( after expansion in steam turbine ) is extracted . I would like to know whether make-up water at higher (>atmospheric) temperature can be added without compromising water quality ? Idea is hot make-up water may improve heat rate of power plant by extracting waste heat at some other point to heat up the make-up water & thus saving fuel.:o

Fly ash sepaartion from Boiler flue gases.

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 09:00 PM PDT

In a thermal power plant, fly ash particles generated from the combustion process of coal are separated in Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) or by using filter bags before gases are released to atmosphere. Considering the efficiency of ESP as well as temperature restriction of filter bag fabric, ash particle emission though reduced but not eliminated completely. Are there any other method / s which achieve 100% reduction of ash particles from flue gases leaving the Chimney.

Breakthrough Indentation Yield Strength Test

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 03:37 PM PDT

Nanovea introduced its patent pending breakthrough method of reliably acquiring yield strength through indentation; ultimately replacing the traditional tensile testing machine for yield strength measurement.

Traditionally yield strength has been tested by using a tensile testing machine, a large instrument requiring enormous strength to pull apart metal, plastic and others. The yield strength (also known as yield point) of a material in engineering (and or materials science) is the point of stress that a material starts to deform plastically. Before reaching the yield point a material will deform elastically but returns to its original shape when stress is removed. A crucial material property for nano and micro related materials found in advancing industries such as biomedical, microelectronics, energy and many others. Until now the most reliable way took large machine effort, sample preparation, and or was impossible to perform on small samples and localized areas.

By using Nanovea's Mechanical Tester in indentation mode, using a cylindrical flat tip, yield strength data can be easily obtained. For years now, the indentation test has been used for hardness and elastic modulus measurements. There has traditionally been an issue with linking macro tensile properties to what was measured during an indentation test. Many studies measuring with spherical tips have allowed stress-strain curves but were never able to give reliable tensile yield strength data that corresponded directly to macro tensile data. Nanovea's patent pending method, using a cylindrical flat tip, gives yield strength directly comparable to what is measured by traditional means. It is believed that the load per surface area at which the cylindrical flat tip penetrates, at increased speed, is directly linked to the load versus surface area at which the material starts flowing in a tensile mode test. Therefore, reliable yield strength results on an endless list of materials, small or large has never before been as obtainable until now.

"This is just another addition, on a long and growing list, of what can be tested with our Mechanical Tester," said Pierre Leroux, Nanovea's CEO. While this specific test is a breakthrough of great importance, it is ultimately just another reason why the Nanovea Mechanical Tester has the widest testing capability of any mechanical testing system.

Stribeck Curve Analysis Using Tribometer

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 03:30 PM PDT

When lubrication is applied to reduce the wear/friction of moving surfaces an increasing load can shift the lubrication from several regimes such as Boundary, Mixed and Hydrodynamic Lubrication. The fluid viscosity, the load that is carried by the two surfaces and the speed that the two surfaces move relative to each other combine to determine the thickness of the fluid film. It is this process that determines the lubrication regime. How the regimes react to friction is shown in what is called a Stribeck curve. To evaluate lubricants, and their reaction with applications the Stribeck Curve can be identified using a Pin On Disk Tribometer.

Boiler tube leakages in power plant

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 08:28 AM PDT

With deteriorating coal qualities in Indian coal, boiler tube leakages have become a chronic problem for boiler outages. In spite of improving flame geometry , regular soot blowing , maintaining burner condition, & watch against delayed combustion of fuel particles, boiler tube leakages are not completely avoided. Major generation loss is mainly due to this problem. Weld-overlay /coating over boiler tubes have improved the performance vis-a vis tube leakages. What is Europian / American or South East countries experience towards yearly availability of boiler with respect to Boiler tube outages?

Please help, same metal samples from two sources machine differently

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 05:51 AM PDT

Hi all

I need your help, I've got two suppliers of Naval brass, the materials are the same from each supplier and a chemical analysis has confirmed this, a hardness test has also been completed with no major differences between the two samples found. The problem is that both of them machine completely different. One of them is perfect and machines easily, yet the other is very difficult and breaks a lot of tools.

The suppliers can't understand why this could happen, so I was wondering if anyone here might have any ideas as to how two materials supposedly the same can act differently on a machine?

Addition of feed water heaters to raise feed water temp.to its saturation point

Posted: 13 Aug 2011 11:09 PM PDT

Generally feed water heaters either low pressure & high pressure are using bleed steam from turbine to raise feed water temp. to as high as possible to saturation level. The advantages being 1) savings in fuel 2) extraction of heat from flue gases & lowering exhaust flue gas temp. 3) Being static in nature no running cost 4) Increase in area of T-Ø chart i.e. work done. However in practice, saturation temp for that particular pressure is never achieved. For example in a typical 210MW Turbo Alternator set, feed water temperature after HP Heater is maximum 275°c when boiler steam pressure is 150kg/cm² while saturation temperature is 350°c .That is 75°c less temp. which is made-up in boiler furnace. Will it be technically possible to add another HP Heater/s to gain this temperature ? This may help in lowering boiler heat rate & economy in fuel/coal.

Reverse orientation of drive train?

Posted: 13 Aug 2011 10:45 AM PDT

hi all, i need to validate a concept of reverse orientationof the gear box being coupled with a 19bhp 300cc engine. i was told to engage reverse gear all the time to all the fwd gears and turning the engine by 180 degree to get forward drive. reverse motion is obtaind at first gear. normal orientation has gear ratios as 31.48, 18.7, 11.4, 7.35 and 55 reverse. and at reverse orientatios gear ratios are told to be 55.08, 32.75, 19.96, 12.87 and 31.48 reverse
. this is basically done to increase the gear ratio as apparent. back drives are installed in lathe but how to get better tordue by using reverse gearing in automobile is quite confusing. are first and reverse gear swaped or something else can be done. we need 55.08 ratio at first for sure. kindly can someone see throught this reply as soon as possible. thank you

Low temperature heat recovery methods in power generation

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 10:06 PM PDT

The designers take utmost care for heat recovery from fuels while designing power plant equipments as well as preservation of it for maximum utilization .With advent of better heat insulation materials, better heat transfer materials in heat exchangers, precious little heat is wasted outside thermal cycle. However any heat having temperature more than atmospheric temperature is a loss. What are methods available to recover this low temp.heat in a Thermal Power Plant?

Better heat transfer fluid other than water in power generation

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 09:57 PM PDT

Presently water (treated) is extensively used worldwide in thermal power generation .The three factors mainly in favor of water being 1) abundantly available in nature 2) can be converted in all three forms viz.liquid, gaseous, & solid. 3)heat can be stored & released as per Universal gas equation.i.e. P V = m R T. However in continuing development on fronts of Heat Transfer; there might be other fluids which may have better heat transfer properties which when used instead of water may benefit in achieving higher electrical generation for the same quantity of fluid. Also it may reduce cost of water treatment plant, auxiliary consumption, blow downs etc etc. Request to enlighten on this subject:o
