Mechanical Engineering Advice - Where?

Posted: 30 Sep 2011 10:49 AM PDT

If I need some software re-written or a new scripts done, there are plenty of sites like Odesk, VWorker, Scriptlance etc.

But where would I go if I wanted some advice or even drawings for special purpose machinery (book packaging)

Do such sites exist?

Dear all,

Its the first time that i am designing the shell and tube type evaporator and for this i have made an excel sheet for ease of calculations but i am not sure and content whether i have done right or wrong and for this i have attached my calculation sheet for you to check and comment if i am wrong any where. My design is based on the following information:

Refrigerant = R404
Capacity = 145 kW
Liquid = 23% concentrated sodium chloride solution
Liquid in= -9 deg. Centigrade
Liquid out = -10 deg. centigrade
flow = 141 cubic meter per hour
evaporating temp = -13 deg centigrade
condensing temp = 30 deg centigrade

I request this forum to check my sheet and comment as early as possible as i have to give my design to manufacturing deptt.

Thanks in advance.

As its my first post thats why i dont know how to attach files, so plz guide me to attach the files

Tata MiniCAT 'Compressed Air' Car Concept & Discussion

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 09:08 PM PDT

Tata MiniCAT is expected to be the compressed air car - aka the car that uses compressed air to power itself. I remember the news back in 2008 that Tata promised that they'll launch the car soon, but we didn't hear anything about the car since then. I'm starting this discussion for CEans to talk about the MiniCAT, its design, engine, specifications, mileage etc. It would be nice if we have participation from that Tata MiniCAT design team. What's quite interesting is that few of the websites say that Tata car would do about 300 km with one set of compressed air cylinders.

Does anyone have more information about the car?

Need help on scissors lift project

Posted: 25 Sep 2011 09:43 PM PDT

Hi guys,
I have this project on scissors lift in my college. It need to be portable to certain extent and able to lift up load of up to 100 kg (~220 lbs). Dimension of the device is projected to be 60 cm (23'') x 80 cm(31'') x 20cm(8'') and it will lift up the load to about 60 cm(23''). The speed in lifting the load is very slow( around 1 inch a second). I've encountered some problems in this project which I hope the CE- ers here can help with.

1. is a hydraulic needed for this load? I am thinking of using a rack gear but I am not sure whether it is appropriate for this load and whether the lifespan of the device will be compromised due to wear and tear.

2. what is the approximate horsepower and size of the motor needed? This is important because if the motor needed is large and expensive, the whole project is moot( budget of less then 500 USD).

Thanks in advance.Hope I get an A in this project. :)

stage of reheat. The steam is exhausted from the engine at 0.07 bar
and 85% dry. The net work developed by the engine is 1600 kJ/kg of
steam. Calculate the thermal efficiency of the engine.

13. (a) (i) Define mechanical efficiency, thermal efficiency and overall
efficiency of a reciprocating steam engine.
(ii) A double acting single cylinder steam engine with cylinder diameter 15 cm and stroke 20 cm, is to develop 20 KW of indicated power at 100 rpm, with a cut off at 20% of the stroke. Double-stage Gear box design help?

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 11:50 PM PDT

Hi I am studying mechanical design and I have a few questions.

What is the difference between a single-stage and a double-stage gearbox?
How do you determine the number of teeth for the gear, given that we know the no. of teeth of the pinion, we don't know the speed reduction ratio.
What is the "hunting tooth ratio"?

Thanks.

Solar Hot Water In Bournemouth

Posted: 23 Sep 2011 04:30 AM PDT

Solar thermal systems heat water enough for washing and bathing. They work all the year, even on dull overcast days. They supply up to 60% of annual hot water to households and can heat swimming pools during warmer months. The solar hot water in Bournemouth is excellent and one could easily get long life of panels up to 15 years.

Combined combustion and heat engine in one.

Posted: 17 Sep 2011 12:54 AM PDT

Internal combustion engines and electric fridges share a common action in that each has piston that acts compression of a gas. CO2 being the modern refrigerant gas R444 needs far less heat to achieve the expansion forces found in combusting air and fuel. The intent of the water cooling jacket is to keep all cylinders at a constant temperature. By having only one cylinder function in combustion and its heat spread across other cylinders. The injector pump may insert R774 in place of combustable fuel. By adapting the valve cam of any internal combustion engine so that the exhaust valve remains open exept for the power stroke. The engine in entirety can mimic that occuring in an electric fridge. This being cool gas is compressed into liquid before exapanding back into a gas. In place of the fridge compressor turning the gas back into liquid, the compression stroke of the internal combustion engine can be put to the same purpose. In that after the injector pump has deliverd the refrigerant into the hot cylinder and it has expanded supplying a force, the exhaust valve opens and stays open throughout the compression stroke, forcing the hot gas from the cylinder into an expansion chamber as found in the common fridge. At which point the gas cooling returns to liquid by the constent pressure hold in the cooling chamber. The liquid is then picked up by the injector pump. CAUTION- The extremely high expansion of CO2 to heat requires alteration to the injector pump capacity so far lessor ammount of liquid is delivered to a hot cylinder, this averts a very loud Whoomph and a great deal of metal parts following their own tragectory.

Heat Balance calculations

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 06:14 AM PDT

I have hot water generator used for generating hot water for the process in the plant at 3 location.

Details are as under:
Capacity : 20 lacs Kcal
Inlet temp of water: 75 C
Outlet temp of water: 95 C
Fuel used : HSD

I have to calculate how much energy i m added in the hot water & how much energy is taken by the process.

I just want to know how to calculate heat consumption in the process & heat added in system.
