Should I major in Computer Science or Computer Engineering?

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 04:15 AM PDT

've had some experience with computer programming and since it is interesting, computer science doesn't seem too bad. On the other hand, I like building things, science is another great interest of mine, so computer engineering sounds great as well. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of each or one of them, or your experience in either field?

Electronic cigarettes for quiting smoking is hot

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 04:02 AM PDT

Along with the glowing smoking ban, numerous companies are thinking of a way to quit smoking. Some companies ban smoking in the office, some companies encourage people stop smoking. Anyhow the wave of quit smoking is upcoming, and for the first wave of benefit is numerous messy smoking substitute goods, such as quit smoking chewing gum, outpatient service, quit smoking medicine, etc. But, now the most popular way to quit smoking is electronic cigarettes.

Since quit smoking with electronic cigarettes is so hot, we might as well investigate what the electronic cigaretts exactly be. First, we search on the internet, we can see countless brand that almost dazzle the eyes. Man companies sell a variety of grades of E-cigarettss, a variety of price points, suitable for a wide range of consumer groups. About the quality, we can't wait to explore.

Finally, we find out some relative expert to get to know E-cigarettes. E-cigarettes is invented in china in 2004, and being sold abroad in the preceding years. Meanwhile, it's also very expensive. Until recent years, E-cigarettes quickly turn into all over the world, prices also corresponding reduce. Now, the price is between 100 to 200 in mainstream.

We admit that E-cigarette is magic, but not like some businessmen says that E-cigarette can quit smoking in few days. It's still follow the general international nicotine replacement therapy actually, although the world health organization is not recognized, but this gadget can help to give up smoking indeed. Just the effect of quitting smoking is not so magic as some manufactories advertise. It's even ridiculous that E-cigarette can clear lung poison. The lung poison can only be cleared through metabolism step by step.

Nowadays, electronic cigarettes market is still chaotic, various quality products are available. It mainly divides into generation electronic cigarettes and the second electronic cigarettes. Generation electronic cigarettes has a poor quality and limited effect of quitting smoking. The most advanced products should be the second generation electronic cigarettes. Such as e-pipe, Electronic Cigarettes. Both of them are typical second-generation electronic cigarettes with highly quality. Among them, Electronic Cigarettes is relatively cheap, higher ratio. If you want to learn specific, you can go up to their Electronics Products official website.

Overall, the prospect of electronic cigarettes is very good, but the market is still needed further standardize, related laws and regulations also need to improve. One sentence to conclude: the future is bright while the road ahead is tortuous.

Sanitary Pipe Broken: Replacement Help

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 10:23 PM PDT

Hi to civil section,
I'm new to this section. A problem made me enter to this section of crazy engineers.
The problem is that a sanitary pipe that was connected to our building was broken by a crane, that was on a work. It was intentional, they wanted to plug in a huge water pipe, so they had to make a path for that pipe. So, they broke sanitary pipe that was connected to our building.
Please tell me the steps/cares that need to be taken while repairing it. The material of the pipe is hard stone/RCCcement like material, should i be okay with using PVC pipes? And should i replace the complete pipe/ only the part broken? Is it okay, if there is a slight increase in its hight(about 1 ft), wouldnt it block the sewage,(does the increase in height create prob, because the huge pipe below is obstructing the path of sanitary pipe?

Image indicates the problem.

System failure's.

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 09:22 AM PDT

System failure's are one of the most important problems faced by any system. Be it a normal operating system or a database management system, failure's can occur in any prevalent system. Hence, the methods by which we can recover a system from any failure is of great significance. There are basically three types of failure's, which are:
1)System failure's:
This failure is one of the most dangerous failure, since it causes the entire system to crash. This can occur due to may reasons like problems in the system hardware, invalid assumptions of the system requirements, etc. One example of this is the "Blue screen of death", which is witnessed in the windows operating system. A similar situation is observed in the UNIX system ,which is termed as "Kernel panic".
2)Transaction failure's:
This failure occurs if the system has to abort a particular transaction due to some problems that might have occurred while any transaction such as invalid data.etc.
3)Disk failure's:
This failure occurs due to tearing of tapes.etc which can be due to many external factors too.

In some circumstances it is very difficult to recover the system.

I believe it is very possible to program the brain. We are in the beginning stages obviously of making this work but it can and will. I have read a lot about the brain and it is very maleable. "Programs of the Brain" by John Z. Young is a good book to read from Oxford University. Ive also read a book called, "The Talent Code". These 2 books are just the root of my ideas. It is possible to create programs that will allow you to calculate mathmatical problems very quickly in your brain like a human calculator. As crazy as it sounds, obsession is the key. You must become obsessed and develop habbits that practice doing these things. Count things in your physical surroundings and then multiply things in your head and the more you do it the more easy it will become. Savants do it and according to, "The Talent Code", because they often focus and basically obsess on doing these due to their special interests. I have already began to calculate numbers in my head intuitively just from practice and habbits ive formed. It requires training of your intuition, logic, and strengthening your Corpus Callosum. The Corpus Callosum is what splits your brain into its 2 hemispheres (Right = Creative, Left = Logical) which would allow your 2 brain hemispheres to communicate better with each other so you can create the logical programs with your creative right hemisphere. This is what Einstein did and how he created his formulas, he was supposedly not born with a Corpus Callosum so the neurons could transfer over at a quicker rate. Playing music also helps a lot, especially piano for the conjunction of 2 hands and the training of ambidexterity. Improvising especially helps with this what like to call, "Intuitive Logic". Imagination, perception, and intuition is the key to opening the doors. Then you can program your brain with any tools you wish to further your intelligence and aptitude. Any questions or arguments you may have please throw them at me.

Man and Machine and Completely Automated Cars

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 09:40 AM PDT

This post is NOT to say that machines are getting intelligent and over taking man.

The root cause is a discussion between me and my friend on the Engineer's importance in the world in creating machines.

I was staying at USA since a month and roaming around , I observe many things Automated. First the cars are Auto transmitted.

We find pretty expensive cars to be AT in India.

So, I was saying that Robot cars are possible, and we (read Engineers) can make a robotic car, which doesnt require any manual intervention.

Google tested it as well.

And , the discussion was no the government will not allow as shown in Robot movie, its a stupid machine which doesnt know whom to harm and whom to not.

I am still confident that within 10-20 years we get cars so intelligent that it knows everything.

So what you guys say about that?

Is complete Automation possible in most of the things?

PS. I sometimes think there should be a software which takes requirements and create the required java/QTP(testing) code.

How do I calculate the magnitude and phase angle using both cosine and sine rules?

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 07:25 AM PDT

Please help! I have spent hours trawling through books and the internet trying to answer this question. I am a first year BTEC student and haven't received any input on how to solve this problem. An electrical circuit is connected to an a.c supply voltage and draws a current from the supply. The circuit has four parallel branches. Each branch has its own current.

The current in branch one i1 has a magnitude of 20A and is in phase with the supply voltage hence it's angle is 0 radians

i2 has a magnitude of 5A ata a phase angle to the reference of 1 radian

i3 has a magnitude of 10A at a phase angle to the reference of 3.14/2 radians

i4 has a magnitude of 10A at a phase angle of 3.785 radians

1)Plot the vectors on a diagram

2)Calculate the magnitude and phase angle, to the reference, of the resultant supply current using both cosine and sine rules as appropriate.

Meet the star

M.Y.S. Prasad, associate director, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota :

He was born in a village called 'Mogalturu' , West Godavari dist in Andhra pradesh.

He is responsible for launch pad preparation and filling of the liquid propulsion fuel that will send the polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) into space, carrying aloft India's lunar orbiter Chandrayaan.

Out of his 33 years with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), he has worked nearly 20 years in developing launch vehicles.

He was part of the team that successfully launched India's first satellite vehicle SLV3.

As part of the rocket team, Mr.Prasad has contributed significantly in the areas of avionics systems, payload augmentation and interfacing and ground station networks.

He played a major role in introducing key technologies into ISRO's launch vehicles, mainly in Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV), to make them reliable and robust.

"The learning of SLV3 and ASLV while designing the PSLV is that the first stage has to be well configured " he quotes.

He credited the late S.Srinivasan, former director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, for designing PSLV's first stage which takes the rocket 50 km above the earth.

Prasad is an ISRO all rounder, having worked in various departments - launch vehicle, satellite design, managing India's geostationary orbit satellites or communication satellites and also as space counsellor at Indian embassy in Paris, interacting with major European space agencies.

As the director of the Mission Control Facility (MCF), he was instrumental in ISRO increasing its transponder lease rentals by eliminating interference in satellite signals.

For some time, ISRO was losing money as five of its transponders were not earning their full potential owing to signal disturbances.

He studied the issue and on one night we traced the disturbance to a loose connection in one of the V-Sat terminals located in Kolkata.

He registered for a doctorate during his stint at MCF and got the Ph.D. for his research on interference in satellite communications.

Prasad was also instrumental in facilitating video conferencing between Indian scientists in Antarctica and their colleagues in Goa.

Know your CEan - Nion

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 05:59 AM PDT

Hei Hei Hei…Here is one more fabulous KYCEan for you. This is gonna be a blast because quite a lot of our CEans in fact most of our CEans don’t know more about CEan-Nion who is one of our CE- Aces; contributed about 270+ valuable posts to CE. And even some of our CEans don’t know whether Nion is He or She ;) Hence I tried more a bit to reveal most of the things about Nion :). CEan- Nion aka Nima Ambhurkar is a Computer Science Engineering Student and a very creative person. She loves drawing, painting, photography. I am very very glad to present her words here...

Pallavi : Hi Nima, you are a Crazy Computer Science engineer, tell us more about yourself.
Nima :
Hello all! I am Nima, currently in my third year of Engineering and I love the world of Smilies. :) I am a feline lover too(especially cats, but not the fat furry ones). Although many people dislike them, I love them anyway. I have two best friends and I am the way I am partly because of them. I cannot thank God enough to have them in my life.

Pallavi : How did you get introduced to CrazyEngineers (CE)?
Nima : AKD introduced me to the awesome world of CE.

Pallavi : Why did you take up this particular engineering trade? What do you like the most about it?
Nima : Engineering happened to be by chance but I am not regretting doing it. Since the time we had a computer at our house, it slowly took my interest and I was astounded with this simple yet complicated machine. Yet, after joining CE I feel that it’d have not been bad had I taken up Civil as my trade. I am really impressed by the wonderful creations the civil engineers come up with. And after when Civil Princess stared to publish posts on VoiCE, the more I felt it so. CP you are really doing a wonderful job!

Pallavi : What is your favorite pass time?
Nima :
Well, there are many things that I prefer doing in my free time. Since my interest lies in photography, I take random pictures every now and then. When I roll back, hardly one or two out of ten is worth though. I also draw and paint stuff. I often do it in my free time. Other than that, I read novels (preferably fiction). I also love dancing to some good beats and I love it when I dance. I dance often when I think I am gaining weight because I eat a lot since I am a foodie :p and I am too lazy to exercise. Tattooing is my new found interest.

Pallavi : Who are your idols or inspirations?
Nima :
I get inspired by the common people whom I see in my day-to-day life. There’s a bit to learn from everybody around you. My Father, Biggie(indirectly), and my two best friends have always been my greatest inspirations. I respect them a lot.

Pallavi : Came to know that you are a very creative person! Let us know about your Creativity.
Nima :
Creativity differs from person to person. In my case, creativity is inclined to the artistic side of me. Imagining things, visualizing them and then making them into reality all by your own thoughts is what I term as creativity. Imagining things and day-dreaming are the things which I do a lot, especially during exam times and yes I come up with most of the creative and good ideas at that time itself! :p

Pallavi : Do you think that engineering in India covers the creative aspect of an individual?
Nima :
I cannot say about the entire nation but form where I’m studying, it definitely doesn’t cover any creative aspect of an individual. All we are told and required to do is mug up the entire syllabus prescribed for that semester. Very few of them actually read and understand the basics. But that doesn’t cover the creative aspect of an individual. Only during the projects, the creativity of a student can shine.

Pallavi : Are you so calm? Why very less number of CEans knows about you?
Nima :
You cannot say calm but I do prefer keeping a low profile everywhere(sometimes it doesn’t happen as I plan though, due to certain reasons). I am very talkative with people who know me. About very less number of CEans knowing me, how am I supposed to answer that question? :p They know better for themselves. But still, I think it is that way because I never signed in to the chat box on CE when it was present except for on CE day. Also, I rarely reply to “The looong thread.” May be that’s the reason.

Pallavi : What made you to follow Numerology?
Nima :
One of my two best friends is very specific about Numerology and Astrology. I don’t remember when but I inadvertently started following it!

Pallavi : Why you are away from social networking sites like facebook and twitter?
Nima :
I could see that question coming! :p Social networking sites according to me are a waste of time for me. I cannot learn anything from it. As far as the “it-helps-maintain-your-friends” matter is concerned, I don’t need a social networking site to be in contact with my friends who really matter to me. It can be done so even without it.

Sometimes I think of creating an account but, I really don’t see any point in doing that and I have no intention of wasting my time more than I already do. I’d rather do and learn something else from the internet.
People raise their brows when they learn that I do not have an account on the world’s most happening social networking sites. The moment seems as if I am an outcast there, but then in the end I know better what people do there. I am not talking about all people out there, but most of them.
And twitter, umm.. I’m planning to create an account on twitter sometime in the future. Although I cannot guarantee about being loyal to it, but I can always try!

Pallavi : What made you to Blog?
Nima :
English has been my favorite subject from the school days. At home, I always scribble whatever comes to my mind. My best friend then introduced me to the world of blogging and I loved it. After exploring this world, I get to see the world from other people’s perspective. There is also a lot to learn from blogging. The way people write, their self composed poems, phrases, etc are fun to read. I love this world and I’d rather be reading blogs than spending time on facebook or other social networking sites.
Also, once I have a favorable count of *really good* photos, I’m thinking of starting a photo blog! :D

Pallavi : Tell us the History behind your Usernames 'Nion'(in CE) and 'Enigma'(in Blogger)
Nima :
*Lol* When I started blogging, I needed an alias for me. The word ‘Enigma’ enticed me and its meaning suited not-very perfectly, but it did suit to some extent to the condition that I wanted to be in back then. Also the word has my real name in it (eNIgMA), hence the username.

And as for CE, the username ‘Enigma’ was already taken up! :( I couldn’t come up with any other name. I wanted a name starting with the letter ‘N’ and with some good meaning, but I couldn’t find any. So I instead went for some random name with no specified meaning. It was/is just another alias.

Pallavi : Tell us any 3 things that annoy you the most?
Nima :
Well, there are *many* things that annoy me.

1. Use of SMS lingo everywhere.
2. People (Indians rather) spitting anywhere they can without any consideration about their surroundings.
3. Devotional songs being played on loudspeakers with the music of some Hindi film song every time there is some Bhagwan(GOD) jayanti(anniversary).
And many more . . .

Pallavi : What is the biggest achievement in your life so far?
Nima :
The moment now! ;)

Pallavi : What changes you found in yourself before and after joining CE?
Nima : I have never been a very technical person. Am not one either now. But knowing and joining CE has explored me to many new things that I’d not have known otherwise. I get to learn a lot form CE.

Pallavi : If you are given a chance to take a role in
CE, what would you like to have and What would you do for CE?
Nima :
I’d like to be a CE-ambassador. I’d like to spread a word about CE and how it can be of help to the budding engineers

Any questions or arguments you may have please throw them at me.

numerical on advanced computer architecture

suppose a multiprocessor is built out of individual process of capable of sustaining 50 Mflops. what is the largest function of program execution time that could be devoted to sequential operation if the parallel computer is to exceed the performance of a super computer capable sustaining 1 Gflops.?

does anybody know how to solve this question?

Which one to choose??

Hello! Everyone! My boss wants me to install some monitoring software on our office computers, but I've no idea where to start looking, does anyone have any experience with a decent one? I've tried the filters built into IE but they are terrible...
I have searched google and got some like these
Employee monitoring software
Remote pc spy software
Spy software
But there're much more..I have no idea.. Could some master tell me how to choose a reliable one from the internet??
Personally I dont agree with monitoring staff, things always get round them and I think boss need to get employee to respect their rules... but like I said its boss!

Xilinx CPLD, decoupling capacitors

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 04:17 PM PDT

Hi Everyone,
I am working on a small PCB with a Xilinx CPLD xc95288xl on it;
it will be a part of a switchboard matrix for an FPGA based multiprocessor which
I am working on as a hobbyist.
I would like to have your help on this problem:
should each Vccint and also Vccio pin have decoupling capacitors ?
Xilinx in his 'xapp112' application note says: decouple all device Vcc pins (maybe it refers only to Vccint pins ...)
Does any one have direct experience ? Thank you.
