Where is HDL subsystem in DSP builder

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 12:14 PM PDT

Hi,

I am new to DSP builder and FPGA programming. I was following DSP builder example which was on implementing FIR filter using DSP builder in Simulink and generating VHDL to be implement in my cyclone 2 FPGA. I came across this block as was given in the example steps which was "HDL SubSystem block" but I can't seem to find this block in my DSP builder library... could someone tell me what is wrong... I even tried reinstalling DSP builder..

here is the tutorial that I have been using to design me FIR filter using simulink.... its on page 39 step 10 from adobe file....its on the 2nd section Implementing DSP design using FPGA....

CEans,

We've setup a neat mechanism to send CE Bulletin to all the members who've opted for receiving emails from administrator.

Currently, we use CE Bulletin to send updates, important announcement from CE and our partners. I wish to know, what can we include in CE Bulletin to make it more interesting and useful for all the recipients.

Are there any volunteers who can help in making CE Bulletin useful by brining content, articles, stories (original), event information etc.?

Is Java more difficult to understand than .Net?

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 03:57 AM PDT

This question popped up in my mind while answering one of the queries on CE Forums. I've many friends who've worked on JAVA and they say it's easier to understand. Other friends say .Net is easier.

I think it would be interesting to know what our CEans think, and why?

16 QAM and OFDM

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 03:53 AM PDT

hi guys, currently im building a passband system of 5 GHz, so I have simulated 16 QAM and its perfectly working fine at 5 GHz.

But I am very new to OFDM, I have been studying on the background of OFDM and all of them only talking about baseband OFDM. Im not interested with using the MATLAB function to generate baseband 16-QAM, cause I have to analyse the changes of BER and EVM with changes of frequency.

So my question is, the generated 16 QAM signal are not in complex value, cause I have summed the I and Q channel at the end, so from the summation of this I and Q channel, I actually got the 16 QAM signal which is very trivial.

Then I have to shift from serial to parallel before performing IFFT in OFDM, but my question is, my signal is not complex, how could I IFFT my signal? should I use (FFT) after the serial to parallel conversion and IFFT back again, but it doesnt make sense.

Please advice me on this. Thank you! Cheers!

Looking for opinions on operation of 4 FET Wheatstone bridge

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 08:29 PM PDT

Hello, this is my first post here.

I am currently working with a Wheatstone bridge containing 1 JFET to sense atmospheric static fields, and the circuit is working. However, having 4 sensors in a bridge gives a signal 4 times as big. I think I have found a way to connect 4 JFETs so they are all operated by a single antenna wire and their resistances will (hopefully) rise and fall appropriately to give me a larger voltage drop across the bridge.

I don't expect all the FETs to react to the same extent, but I thought there would be some changes in the right directions. I know the circuit is not perfect, but I don't care. Just looking for a varying DC voltage across the bridge proportionate to the voltage sensed by the antenna.

You'll notice that there are no bias resistors in the circuit. This is common in many static sensing circuits so I kept up the tradition. The FETs are simply acting as voltage controlled resistors anyway, passing DC only. There is no AC signals involved.

Brief explanation of operation:
The gate of T1 senses a positive voltage, for example, so it becomes more conductive. The drain side of T1 becomes more negative so the gates of T3 and T4 become negative and they conduct less. Meanwhile, T2 gate is more positive than T3 and T4 so it conducts more, just like T1. And vice-versa.
The result is 4 changing resistances instead of one so more signal output.
T1 and T2 work together and T3 and T4 must work together but opposite to T1 and T2.

The purpose of this circuit is to get away from using resistors. I have a working circuit now with just T1 as the only FET and 3 resistors. But if the resistors can vary, like T1, the bridge output will be greater.
One reason I don't have bias resistors is that the extra resistance will increase the total resistance of the bridge, and it is most sensitive to small signals picked up by the antenna when the bridge has a small resistance.

I've checked this using the Wheatstone Bridge calculator I found online at:
Wheatstone Bridge Calculator

The FET connected to the antenna is outdoors with only the source and drain wires coming indoors. The rest of the circuit can be built indoors and connected to my current circuit.

I would like some opinions about whether or not you think this circuit would work. If not, where did I go wrong?
Please keep the explanations simple, this is just a hobby and I'm not familiar with using transistors.

Thanks

Thevenin maximum power transfer theorem

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 03:52 AM PDT

In Thevenin maximum power transfer theorem it state that the load resistance,RL must be equal to internal resistance of the source,Rin. However, the efficiency of the circuit is just 50%. At here, can i say i use power source in a more effective way if be able to have an output of higher efficiency and at the same time considerable high output voltage but this output voltage will be slightly lower abit than when RL=Rin. The efficinecy will be higher alot if using RL>>Rin but the amount of output voltage will be extremely low. So in order to choose a load resistor give optimization to power saving and total output power, can consider it as a product of efficiency and total oputput power?

here i let X=efficiency*output power and consider a voltage source connected in series with an internal resistance and a load resistance,nRin where n is the value to be find.

efficiency=Pout/Pin=V^2[(nRin)/(Rin+nRin)^2]/V^2(nRin+Rin)=n/(1+n)
output power=v^2(nRin)/(n+1)^2Rin^2)=(V^2/Rin)(n/(n+1)^2)

hence X=n^2/(n+1)^3[V^2/Rin]
differentiate it with respect to n using UV method will finally get
dx/dn=[n/(n+1)^3][2-[3n/(n+1)]]
when dx/dn=0 n=0(rejected) and n=2
so at here, can i say if i take into consideration of power saving and the amount of output power dissipated, taking n=2 will give me what i want? a desirable high efficinecy and high output power.

12th c++ problem

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 08:39 PM PDT

Little Boy Banku is mad at his teacher, who ate all the sweets in the flat and even went to the neighbours to eat their sweets too. Now Banku's parents brought home a chocolate bar, and, sure enough, School teacher is here already and wants to eat it. However, this time Banku has firmly decided that not a single piece of chocolate will go to this glutton. Banku wants to use his teacher's addiction to the games of chance and suggests playing the following game. A chocolate bar can be considered as a rectangle of square units arranged in m rows and n columns and separated by lines . Two players take alternate turns. At his turn, a player must take one piece of chocolate and split it into two along one of the lines. If a player can't make a legal move (which happens when all pieces of chocolate consist of a single unit square), he loses, and the winner takes all the chocolate. But the teacher is smart enough! He immediately understood who should make the first turn in order for teacher to win, assuming that players take optimal turns. Can you guess that?
Input

First line of input contains number of test cases. The second line of the input contains space-separated integers m and n (1 <= m, n <= 50).
Output

For each test case If teacher should start the game in order to win, output "[:=[first]" otherwise, output "[second]=:]".
Example

Input:
3
2 4
1 3
2 9

Output:
[:=[first]
[second]=:]
[:=[first]

Brief explanation of Quick Sort algorithm

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 09:32 AM PDT

On request of one user from ce,i am going to explain one of the most commonly used sorting algorithm ie quick sort

It is based on Divide and conquer approach.

It is one of the common practical example of recursion

There are generally 3 steps in this

1:-Divide a problem a multiple sub problems
2:-Solve them individually.
3:-Merge those sub problems to find solution of main problem

Algorithm

1. Choose any key element in an array which is know a pivot.
2. Reorder the array such that that all elements which are less than the pivot come before the pivot and so that all elements greater than the pivot come after it. After the partitioning, the pivot is in its final position.
3. Recursively reorder two sub-lists: the sub-list of lesser elements and the sub-list of greater elements.

Below is the program written in c++ ,it can help you for better understanding

//Program for Quicksort
#include<iostream.h>
#include<conio.h>

so at here, can i say if i take into consideration of power saving and the amount of output power dissipated, taking n=2 will give me what i want? a desirable high efficinecy and high output power.

Use of biomass

Dear CEans,
We are here, boasting ourselves as members of developed nations and we simply turn a blind eye to facts. Now, I want you all to remember that we are engineers, if we do not think about it, who will.
Cities are the mirrors of our development statistics. The major challenge in cities is the wastes. In cities, you can find the cleanest places, and also the most hazardous. So, what can we use to curb the wastes in cities? can we use the biomass to power the city? lets discuss about this, we can bring on the change. Lets do it.

Should Companies Ask Jr. Employees To Sign 2 Year Bond?

Posted: 01 Sep 2010 10:53 PM PDT

Many leading companies, I've come to know, are asking engineering grads to join 2 year contract at the time of joining. The contract abides the new employees to continue the job with the employer for a minimum of 2 years. It's one-sided bond; meaning the employer can terminate the employment but the candidate cannot.

I've heard that this is done because the employers spend considerable money and efforts on new joinees in training them for projects. Lot of recruiters eye these 'trained employees' and offer them a slightly higher package and thus save the whole cost of training them.

But this may work against the candidates in many cases. For example, if the employer doesn't offer work in the domain of candidate's interest, the employee is bound to get frustrated and stuck up in job for minimum 2 years. Or worse, if the employer does not have a project the candidate is made to be 'on bench' for months! That ruins future career prospects for the candidate.

What's your take on this?

Mobile phones in a petrol bink

VLSI Problem - Need Solution

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 10:54 AM PDT

Design a CMOS inverter chain as a clock buffer which drives the first stage of clock tree with equivalent interconnect parasitic capacitance of 1nF. The input gate capacitance of the inverter is 50fF. Device model parameter and unit equivalent resistance (average equivalent resistance may be used) can be found in the unified model. The unit capacitance is 15fF and gamma(r) = 1.

(1) Find the number of stages required when the effective fan-out are e, 4 and 6,respectively. Calculate the corresponding inverter chain delay.

(2) Which case in (1) gives the lowest path delay? Estimate the W of the last inverter in the chain (L=0.25mm). Assume that the first inverter has device sizesof W/L=2 for PMOS and W/L=1 for NMOS.

(3) Estimate the total dynamic power dissipation if the clock frequency is 1GHz and VDD = 2.5V

================================================== ==============
P.S. I need the solution for part (b).. Getting absurd result.. Tried everywhere on my own... Finally to CE :)

Cheers,
Prakash
