Posted: 18 Mar 2011 05:38 AM PDT Hi there, basically I've been off college for a few weeks and recently came back. We've just been given an assignment, and I'm a bit stumped on a few of the question, and although we've been taught (I was off for a few lessons due to illness) I just have no idea where to start with the questions. I'll post them here and hopefully somebody could give me a bit of advice on them. :) Question 1; Describe in detail the construction of a solar panel as an external power source including the P-N junction and what is meant by P-type and N-type semiconductor materials. Include typical applications and justify why they are used in these small or large scale operations. Question 2; a) Describe the properties and application of a solid conductor including an accurate definition of a conducting material defining atomic structure. b) Describe the properties and application of a solid insulator including an accurate definition of a insulating material defining atomic structure. c) Choose an application of a liquid or gas conductor and detail the use of the material Choose an application of a liquid or gas insulator and detail the use of the material Basically task 1 I can't find nothing on the construction of solar panels as an external power source, and I'm somewhat confsused as to what my teacher wants from me for this question. Question 2 is basically the same I know what solid conductors etc.. are, but finding information hard to come by when it comes to application and properties. Thanks in advance. :)
Posted: 18 Mar 2011 03:47 AM PDT Was just chatting with a friend about the old skool games consoles/computers - Commodore 64, Spectrum ZX, Atari 2600 and was reminiscing about some of the classic games. Combat on the Atari is probably my earliest memory of a computer game. I also remember a game called Tank Attack, but I can't recall what this was like and what console it was on - anyone remember this or have any other favourite retro games of their own to share?

Posted: 18 Mar 2011 03:18 AM PDT Hi, I need a laptop stand which I can use in my bed. Lately, I've been doing too many things in my laptop and I would really like to work from my bed. Has anyone come across any such stand? Or can anyone point me to any link? At the worst case, at least some DIY stuff, maybe?? Thanks!!

Posted: 17 Mar 2011 11:30 PM PDT In the US I hear to work in the trades you need only do a 2 year course Would it be a likely and acceptable career path for a person to go from say, plumbing or welding, or some other trade to continue studying some form of engineering. Would this type of path be accepted by the white collar engineering community ?
Three Gorges Dam Construction Details & Study Posted: 17 Mar 2011 10:22 PM PDT The three Gorges Dam is world's largest hydro-electric dam being built at Sandouping, ChinaYangtze River. It's also going to be the single largest source of electric power. I invite all Civil CEans to discuss this mammoth construction mega-project and also provide some interesting insights to civil engineering enthusiasts like me :) What I hear is, the life span of the dam is only 70 years. Can someone begin the discussion with why the life spam of this dam is so short?
