DNA Electronics Partners with Roche to Develop Semiconductor Based Sequencing System Posted: 01 Nov 2010 07:29 AM PDT London, United Kingdom, Nov 01, 2010 - DNA Electronics, a fabless semiconductor provider of solutions for real-time DNA and RNA analysis, announced today that it has entered a partnership with 454 Life Sciences, a Roche Company. The collaboration will focus on the development of a low-cost, high-throughput, long read, high density DNA sequencing system. As part of the agreement, DNA Electronics has signed a non-exclusive licence to provide relevant IP from its proprietary semiconductor technology portfolio to Roche. This technology which enables sensitive detection of nucleotide incorporation during sequencing will build on 454 Life Sciences' current pyrosequencing-based platform. The collaboration leverages DNA Electronics' unique knowledge of semiconductor design and expertise in pH-mediated detection of nucleotide insertions with 454 Life Sciences' long read sequencing chemistry to produce a seamless evolution from optical detection to low-cost, highly scalable electrochemical detection. DNA Electronics' technology utilizes completely electronic methods for semiconductor-based detection of DNA nucleotide incorporations via pH changes. The pH change is generated when two complementary nucleotides bind together and protons are released in the process which switches on an ion sensitive semiconductor field effect transistor (ISFET), allowing real-time DNA sequencing and analysis. This ground breaking electronic DNA detection technology overcomes the limitations of traditional optical detection technologies which depends on labels and has exacting manufacturing demands. DNA Electronics provides "Fabless" CMOS semiconductor core technology solutions which are label free and can be fabricated in any microchip foundry in the world and developed into multiple platforms. The collaboration between DNA Electronics and 454 Life Sciences is a pivotal step to realizing the vision of routine human genome sequencing that can identify mutations and structural variations within hours. "We have always believed that the marriage between mature standard CMOS semiconductor technology, ubiquitous in the consumer electronics world, and the molecular life science industry will eventually transform Research machines into affordable Diagnostics tools," said Professor Christopher Toumazou FRS, DNA Electronics Chairman and CEO. "We are delighted to embark on this collaboration with 454 Life Sciences, a pioneer in the field of high-throughput sequencing. We will complement our DNA on CMOS chip expertise with 454's expertise in long-read chemistry and sequencing instrument design" Commenting on the partnership, Christopher McLeod, President and CEO of 454 Life Sciences said, "We're pleased to work together with DNA Electronics, the inventors of ISFET DNA sequencing technology, to bring the benefits of semiconductors to the field of sequencing. This collaboration nicely combines our expertise in long read sequencing chemistry with DNA Electronics' understanding of ISFET technology and semiconductor design." Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. Awesome Presence Of Mind!! - Must Read hahaha Posted: 01 Nov 2010 05:33 AM PDT An old man lived alone in Minnesota. He wanted to spade his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and mentioned his situation: Dear Son, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my potato garden this year. I hate to miss doing the garden, because your mother always loved planting time. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me, if you weren't in prison. .............................Love, Dad Shortly, the old man received this telegram: "For Heaven's sake, Dad, don't dig up the garden!! That's where I buried the GUNS!!" At 4 a.m. the next morning, a dozen FBI agents and local police officers showed up and dug up the entire garden without finding any guns. Confused, the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what happened, and asked him what to do next. His son's reply was: "Go ahead and plant your potatoes, Dad.......................... It's the best I could do for you from here." Moral: NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE IN THE WORLD, IF YOU HAVE DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING DEEP FROM YOUR HEART, YOU CAN DO IT. IT IS THE THOUGHT THAT MATTERS NOT WHERE YOU ARE OR WHERE THE PERSON IS. |
Posted: 01 Nov 2010 05:20 AM PDT Putting one more time pass mail. Brain v/s GF No prices for guessing who won at last. Nice one..........* Akash was waiting for his love .... "30 minutes late!!", his brain shouted at him, "Last time you were 5 mins late and she had literally gobbled u up ... remember??" "Yeah yeah", he said to his brain, "You know her ... all moody and stuff .... oh there she is" "Scold her OK?", his brain advised. "OK I will try" Sweet Sheetal comes with the cutest smile and says "I’m sorry honey .. I was shopping for shoes .. totally forgot about you" "What if you had said that line buddy?", shouted his brain ... "she would have had a nervous breakdown" Akash ignored his brain .. "It’s OK honey .. its only half an hour . no problem" She smiled once again .. held his hand and asked "Hope you remember what occasion is today" "OMG!!!", thought Akash ..... "Brain ... search database for reminders, anniversaries, silly anniversaries, birthdays and birthdays of people I dont care about" Brain got into action ... he started delegating work to different parts .. parallel processing .. multiple search .......... complete memory scan. Sheetal stared at Akash .... "Hello!! u have been staring at me for 2 minutes now ... u OK?" "Huh!!!", he said, "Oh ... nothing's wrong .. was lost in thought" "No records found", said the brain ... "Da**mn!!", thought Akash "So what say ... how do we celebrate this day?", she asked. Akash is all confused ... "Ask her ...dumbo?".. said the brain "OK OK ...stop pushing me" "Honey .. U know my lousy memory.. I guess I can't recall what today is" "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", she shouted ... and started crying. "How could you forget!! ..... it’s my doggy's birthday" "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" A moment of silence. His entire brain staff was laughing at him. Akash was dumbfounded. "What the hell am I supposed to do know?", he asked his brain. "Damage control sequence initialized ... don't worry our specialist will comeback with the perfect line to make everything all right" "Better do it fast ..brainy" The brain was working at 90% capacity .... gathering and analyzing all data on 'How to handle women?' Finally an answer was computed and communicated to Akash. He looked up to her, and said "Of Course I remember your doggy's bday .. how can I forget that sweet mutt's special day" She looked up with utter surprise ... "HUH!!!!!!! ........ Doggy is the name of my cat you je**rk" She stood up angrily and left. Akash and his brain were left there clueless. :):) |

The New Slashtag Search Engine: Blekko Posted: 01 Nov 2010 05:02 AM PDT Slashtags are curated sets of web sites organized around a particular topic. These cover almost all the topics we can think of. Slashtags are added to search queries so that search results are limited only to the curated sets of sites. The long anticipated search engine founded by Rich Skrenta, has finally opened to the public with the name: 'Blekko' For example, if we search “cure for headaches” on Blekko, it will provide results only from the top quality sites in the health category like US National Institutes Of Health or the UK’s National Health Service. For searches that don’t fall within one of Blekko’s pre-defined categories, Blekko uses its proprietary ranking algorithms to deliver relevant results from its 3 billion page web crawl. As users create and refine more slashtags, Blekko plans to expand “auto-slashing” to improve results in more categories. Blekko has been available on a very limited basis in private beta that began in July, 2010. More than 8,000 users from around the world joined the beta. During the beta period, users created more than 3,000 slashtags. With Blekko, it's like Wikipedia getting a Search Engine. :) What do you think? |
Indian Student Creates Robot with Emotional Intelligence Posted: 01 Nov 2010 04:46 AM PDT A 17-year-old Doon School student has created a robot model that possesses emotional intelligence and can even dish out answers for unexpected questions with the help of the internet. The 3-dimension Robo ‘iTalk’, an award winning working model, talks in English, lisps like a human and understands human moods of happiness and anger with the help of unique programmed algorithms and a ‘software development kit’ offered by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. “The iTalk is a robot capable of communication in a manner similar to humans. Technically, his functional construct also emulates the basic blueprint of the human body. By interpreting data in the same manner we do, he is able to emulate human behavioural tendencies,” Arjun, a class-12 student at the Doon School, said. “He (the robot) is an intelligent module, able to take decisions on his own, learning from past experiences,” he added. The ‘iTalk’ Robo can distinguish between different humans with an accuracy of 97.68 per cent as it is enabled with a stereoscopic vision and face recognition software. “The speech analysis software put inside it enables it to differentiate between different pitches and voice samples,” Arjun, who displayed his creation during his school’s 75th founder’s day celebrations, recently, said. Arjun, who was assisted by his junior Sookrit Malik from class 10th in the project, now plans to take the Robo to international innovation forums and get a larger technical assistance from institutes like the MIT. The students have put an initial investment of Rs 70,000 in the project which was funded by the school. The ‘iTalk’ although has no sci-fi movie connection but it bears resemblance to the 2008 Walt Disney produced science fiction film WALL-E, in which the computer is designed to clean up a waste covered Earth sometime in the future, Arjun said. “For each new person it meets, it creates a new profile, logging all information. This allows it to carry out various tasks such as having a conversation, and as soon as it is told something which is not already stored, it logs on to the internet and gets the information and also saves it,” he said. The ‘iTalk’ stands 2.5-feet tall, has two eyes as webcameras, a speaker for the mouth and a track system for legs. News Source: The Hindu |

Questions about ICE need to be answered ^_^ Posted: 31 Oct 2010 03:01 PM PDT Hello every one, good morning / evening I'm an Instrumentation and Control Engineering student , from Saudi Arabia. Actually, ICE is not well known in my society, so I usually get lots of questions about my major. What is about ? In which branch does it fit ? The problem is that I myself don't know the answers. I'm in my 1st year and studying other majors courses such as Analogue and Digital Electronics, PLC, Microprocessor, Electrical Machine, Industrial Control and Computer control. Instrumentation and control and Instrumentation Engineering are the two courses that is OUR courses. Does that mean If you want to be great in your specializing of ICE you have to know Automation , Control, Programing, Electronics and instrumentation very well ? Does our major deals with measurement and control only ? To measure the pressure and control the flow , is that how far we can get ? What can a great Instrumentation Engineer can do ? Can he do a project to be paid for millions ? Can he invent some thing that could change the world ? or get noble prize ? I got excited and forgot that I'm new crazy . Happy to be one of you  Best wishes, An Old Arabic Book ! |
