Ideas for modelling of Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC)

Posted: 24 May 2011 06:58 AM PDT

Dear Engineers,

I'm a final year chemical engineering student and i will have my final year project (FYP) this semester. I have been given a general title of modelling Direct Methanol Fuel Cell for my FYP.

Regarding that, does anyone have any suggestion on what problem statement or in what area can I specialize for this DMFC project?

Appreciate your help, Thanks.

Alcohol Powered 2 stroke engine

Posted: 24 May 2011 04:49 AM PDT

I have an old scooter engine (+ the scooter :P) and I wanna run it on pure ethanol for a project. On my research on the internet, I found that people are rather divided on the topic: some say it is the fuel of the future and the others say that ethanol has many disadvantages, like--
1. it absorbs water
2. it dissolves the motor oil, causes high rate of wear and tear.
3. eth from organic resources (which I wanna use) contains high amount of resins, which clog up the engine.

My main problem, however, is running a 2 Stroke engine on ethanol, and I can't find much data on this specific problem.

Can you please help?:)

Innovative re-CAPTCHA Alternatives - Ideas Invited

Automated registration bots are a big pain in the a$$ for any web administrator. To prevent the spam bots, we use re-CAPTCHA (human verification technique), but they prove to be a big problem for users filling out registration form.

Can we think of a system which will identify humans? I'm inviting innovative re-CAPTCHA replacement ideas.

Doubts on Bluetooth detection

Posted: 24 May 2011 01:14 AM PDT

Hi guys,
As a part of a project work, i am supposed to detect the number of bluetooth devices switched on on a particular road by the people traveling through it. I attached a bluetooth dongle to my laptop and it started detecting numerous devices in a span of 3 hrs. With the intention to further develop this i used another dongle connected to another laptop placed at a distance of one km on the same road(road has no turnings). Now the number of devices detected by the second dongle was far less than the first one.
I then placed both the dongles quite nearby and even in that case the number of matching samples from both devices were really less (out of 50 detected by the first one, only 20 was re detected by the second dongle). I am unable to find the reason for this discrepancy. Can anyone please help me...Is it a problem with the device or with the network...Kindly help me...Thanks in advance..

Forum Flames: Handling Issues & Fights With Forum Members

Posted: 23 May 2011 11:03 PM PDT

CEans,

As any community grows, it gathers members emotionally attached to it. Althought it's an incredibly good thing for any community - it often results in what's called forum 'flames'. Flames is a name to fights among members on the Internet. Flames result in members getting hurt and eventually quitting the community. No one wants such situation.

Even on CE, we've had forum flames. Sometimes openly, sometimes through PM or sometimes off the forum (through other means of communication like Facebook, twitter, email etc.). There are few things every online user must keep in mind, especially those who are on forums -

1. We gather here to do something constructive, to add value to our technical & non-technical knowledge and be a better person.
2. Everyone has their own point of view which may not always go with your line of thought.
3. Everyone has their own UNIQUE way of expressing themselves.
4. Everyone likes to be treated nicely and with respect.

With these points in mind - it is advised that no comment on any online community should be taken personally. Sarcasm often hurts people, so avoid it. If you do not agree with anyone's thought - do not say he/she is wrong. We are not here to tune the world to our thoughts. Most importantly, learn to ignore and move forward.

A Note About Yesterday's CE Downtime

Posted: 23 May 2011 10:45 PM PDT

CEans,

April - June are usually the lowest traffic days of CE community ever year. We decided to go ahead with our existing server configuration thinking the server would handle the traffic. Our estimates, as always, were wrong. Looks like CE's popularity has shot up in last 2 weeks and CE's VoiCE Authors are exploding the blog with awesome content & engineering news updates. As a result, traffic to our blog and forum has gone up, beyond our expectations.

Couple of our VoiCE posts received never-seen-before traffic ( Ex. : PS3 Firmware Update 3.61 Available, PSN Phased Restoration Begins - CrazyEngineers & 3G Attracts 9 Million Users In 4 Months - CrazyEngineers ) which bought the server down. It took us some time to investigate the real cause of server going down and coming to conclusion that we needed a server upgrade. The decision was made after our expert server side administrators tried out various server optimization techniques.

That's the reason we experienced site downtime for about 4 times in last 8-10 days. Yesterday, we decided to upgrade the server. Since this is a critical activity, we decided to shut down the site so that the upgrade is smooth. The server was rebooted twice and we didn't have access to the forum for long time. That's why our initial estimate of 30 minutes of downtime  was extended to over 4 hours.

I'm happy to report that the server is now back, is more powerful and hopefully will sustain your love :bighug:. We wish to grow our new server's limits now and with your help and active contribution, take CE to even newer heights.

PS: Please be alerted that there is a slight chance that unexpected issues might occur. We however hope that the downtime, if any, won't be more than 2 minutes longer. If you have thoughts, here's official thread to discuss it with fellow CEans ->
