Productive way to spend Ist year summer vacations?

Posted: 18 May 2011 01:51 PM PDT

Please suggest some productive ways to spend Ist year summer vacations. I am EEE student , some of my batch-mates have decided to study some programming language in some institute.
What did you do during your first year summer vacations? If studying programming language is a good idea which one should I study? Should I join an institute like NIIT??

Ist year student, need suggestions on project during summer vacations.

Hi I am Ist year EEE student and want to do a project during my summer vacations just to get a hands-on learning experience. Can you give me some suggestions? Is there any free software I can download and learn about building circuits etc.. or something else? I want to do something where I can build something practical.

Also suggest me what else should I do during my 1st year vacations. Thank you

Solving Mathematics Without Calculator

Posted: 18 May 2011 09:50 AM PDT

We all being Engineers have the habit of solving most of the problems using 'Calculator'. So, let us share the tricks to perform the basic calculations without making the use of calculator.
I make the start.

To multiply any two, 2-digit numbers:
  1. Multiply the unit-place digits of both the numbers and note it down as a part of result.
  2. Cross multiply the digits and add their product.
  3. Multiply the tens-place of both the numbers.
Eg: To multiply 41 and 62:
Step 1: Multiply (1*2) i.e units place of both numbers which comes out to be 2.

Step 2: Cross multiply both numbers. Multiply (4*2) and (1*6). Add their products i.e. (8+6=14). Here, 1 is considered as carry.

Step 3: Multiply (4*6) i.e. tens place of both numbers which comes out to be 24. Now add the carry (1) to 24, which gives out 25.

So the final answer turns out to be 2542. You can check it on calculator. :p
If this approach is practised for 2-3 times, then surely multiplication of 2-digit numbers becomes quicker than that of the traditional method. Just give it a try. ;)

Final Year Project - Electric Vehicle: Electric Motor Design Improvement

Posted: 18 May 2011 07:46 AM PDT

Hi! I'm a mechanical engineering undergraduate at University of Science Malaysia and I will be entering into my final year in September. Currently doing my internship.
I was given an opportunity to propose my own final year project title, as long as it has the potential to be commerciable.

I've always wanted to have electric vehicles (EVs) plying on our road, so I've decided to develop this area for my final year project.

Besides mileage per single charge problem (associated with premature battery chemistry. I'll leave that to the chemists to go figure...), and recycling wasted braking energy (my friend is doing Regenerative Braking System for his paper), I was wondering if I could improve the efficiency or cost of electric motors.

But I'm not sure what problems electric motors have, or even if there is any space for improvement (other than trying to develop a hot superconductor for the armature coils. I'll leave that for the material guys/chemists to solve...).

So CE guys,
-I need some kind of problem statements for electric motors. What is the latest electric motor technology used in EVs and what's the usual complaints on that? (Maybe the motors on Mitsubishi iMiEV, Nissan Leaf, or Tesla Roadster)
-other ideas related to electric vehicles (such as alternative/auxiliary energy recovery systems & devices, transmission for maintaining high torque at high rpm, continuous variable transmission, etc.)

It'll be great if you could provide some ideas that can be commercialized/practical so that I can get better chances of approval from my professor, & of course get EVs on the road quickly & cheaply. We'll choke on CO2 and die if we don't. haha

Here i am with some thing different idea:rolleyes:, just discuss on following points.
1) What is the domain registration & which is the best at this time in market?
2) what is the host & which is the best at this time?
3)what is the basic procedure to create the website.?

microcontroller programming

Posted: 18 May 2011 05:21 AM PDT

Hello everyone..
I am doing a project on brushless dc motor control using Atmel32 UC3C microcontroller.
I have just started learning microcontroller programming and I am stuck at a point.
I am obtaining a waveform at PWM pins and I want an LED to follow this waveform i.e. Led lights up when waveform goes high n vice versa. Can anyone please tell me how to do that?

Alternatively I want an LED to follow a waveform given at an input pin (J41).
I have been stuck here for days and I would really appreciate some help. Thank you:)

Engineering Comics

CEans,

I've always wanted to start a comic strip (daily/weekly) here on CrazyEngineers. Engineer's life is full of awesome things and it would be an awesome thing to start a comic strip based on engineering, engineer's lives. If you are one of those with creative skills and can draw, we would love to engage you in CE Team :)

Feel free to refer your friends who you think can make us laugh. What say you?
