Posted: 02 Apr 2011 11:16 AM PDT Well done to India on becoming cricket world champions. It was well deserved and shows what can be accomplished when one is committed to a goal and when one gives everything to attain that goal. Posted: 02 Apr 2011 04:27 AM PDT I think today I'm working a lot to customize my favorite browser Firefox's newer version 4 and thus adding many new add-on. One very useful add-on I found is Start Faster. As the name states, this add-on helps the browser to load much much faster than earlier. :) Explaination as provided: A large proportion of the startup time is spent on loading the Firefox library(.dll, etc) files. Earlier when firefox people tried to speed up the browser start up by loading the Firefox binaries more efficiently on Windows, further testing revealed that to not be true in all cases and that the Windows Prefetch service was still killing the startup speed.. There is a DIY way to opt out of prefetch by gaining Administrator privileges and deleting files out of the prefetch directory. The plan is to provide a Windows service to handle Firefox updates. Additionally the service would be able to do useful things like delete prefetch files, defragment Firefox databases(or at least help report on fragmentation levels). This is all tricky stuff. After installing the extension, "Faster Firefox" shortcut on the Desktop should result in up to 2x speed up in Firefox startup. This addon does not yet work on XP. Download "Start Faster" from here. Facebook removing underage users Posted: 02 Apr 2011 02:47 AM PDT Facebook is booting around 20,000 underage users per day. According to a study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, nearly half of all 12-year-olds in the U.S. are using social network sites, despite not meeting the minimum age requirements for sites like Facebook. And such popularity only balloons once the teens grow older: roughly 64% of 13-year-olds are social networking; between the ages of 14 to 17, that figure jumps to 82%, says Pew. Read more... |

Surface finishing process-Lapping Posted: 02 Apr 2011 12:44 AM PDT Lapping is a surface finishing process used to give a surface finish to articles. It is essentially an abrading process. Very less material can be removed from this process only around 0.005 to 0.01 mm is removed. This is a low efficiency process and is used only when a required amount of surface finish is required. In this process, the laps i.e.; lapping shoes are charged with abrading powders like emery, iron oxide, chromium oxide. Laps are made from any material like soft cast Iron soft steel, brass etc. These laps are made to rub against the surface so that the irregular surface erodes. For better surface finish, the laps can be given reciprocating motion etc. In short two types of motions can be combined The lapping machine is available in three types. 1.Vertical axis lapping machine 2. Center less lapping machine 3.Abrasive belt lapping machine. |
Stribeck Curve for lubricant comparison Posted: 02 Apr 2011 12:28 AM PDT I need to plot a Stribeck curve for a lubricant over all regimes of lubrication. I have access to a pin/ball on disk machine. However, in most literature pin on disk is performed only for Stribeck curve plotting of boundary/mixed lubrication regimes. Is there a particular reason for not being considered for EHD and HD regimes? The possible sliding speeds are in the range of 0.75m/s to 7.5m/s. The range of load is 5-200N(6 mm pin diameter). |
