3D printing enabled Aston Martin Racing to develop LMP1 race car in under six months

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 08:07 AM PDT

Stratasys FDM Technology supported the design and build of the new AMR-One race car

FRANKFURT - 28th March 2011 - (NASDAQ: SSYS) Stratasys Inc. says Aston Martin Racing (AMR) was able to meet an aggressive development schedule for its AMR-One race car by using 3D printing.

The company's Dimension® 3D Printer was used to mock up the chassis, driver controls and engine of the race-car. The 3D printer produced prototypes for concept and testing of Aston Martin's new AMR-One, (LMP1 class). Developed in under six months, the car will be driven by the Aston Martin Racing works team drivers in the 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC).

AMR selected the Dimension machine for its rapid prototyping capabilities after seeing the speed and quality of the parts produced for the Prodrive run rally team in a previous project. Having the machine on site helped the race team to design, test and build a complete car to meet the tight deadline for entry into this year's ILMC.

Built from the ground up, AMR-One features a new bespoke carbon fibre chassis, an open cockpit and a significantly down-sized engine, all of which required testing during the building process. The Dimension machine was used primarily for designing and testing the engine parts as well as mocking up the chassis and driver controls. This ensured ultimate efficiency and that the new design met the 2011 regulations from the Le Mans governing body – the ACO. The car was developed from start to finish between autumn 2010 and the end of February 2011.

Aston Martin Racing is also exploring the idea of using the 3D printer to make finished parts to bolt onto the car. One item being considered is the front wing splitters used for aerodynamic flow.

"When we received final sign-off to build the car for this year's ILMC, using rapid prototyping was a no-brainer for us, as we had a tight deadline to meet. Most of the engine was prototyped on the Dimension machine, which also proved very useful for the early stages of determining the driver fit for the car," says George Howard-Chappell, Technical Director at Aston Martin Racing. "Without the 3D printer, we would not be testing the car today. Following the success with the AMR-One, we hope to utilise the capabilities of another Stratasys machine to help build and deliver end-use parts for future cars."

"The AMR-One has achieved a balance of aesthetics and aerodynamics, and FDM technology has helped make this possible," says Tim Heller, European MD for Stratasys. "We wish the Aston Martin Racing team the best of luck with the upcoming season."

The FDM 3D Printing process is patented by Stratasys, Inc.

Hydraulics and Hydrology

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 06:54 AM PDT

I just want to ask what is the difference between the subject Hydraulics from the subject Hydrology???
What are the lessons to be discussed on this two subject?? Why is it important in the field of civil engineering???

help :)

hello every one.. i need some help and ideas here.. i have a project to make "car parking counter" for up to 99 slots.. the idea in its simplest form is to have a sensor in each parking slot, and two 7 segments displays common for all the slots.. so when a car enters the slot, the counter starts counting, and the display shows the number (01) which means that there is 1 full slot, and the rest are available..
i have the counters circuit but i need to konw how to conect it with the senser, to perform the wanted task??

Should A Country Invest More In Education/Discipline That Produces More Jobs?

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 10:45 PM PDT

This topic popped up while reading article by Prof. Vivek Wadhwa: Engineering vs. Liberal Arts: Who

Prof. Wadhwa writes -

Quote:

In a speech before the National Governors Association on Feb 28, Gates had argued that we need to spend our limited education budget on disciplines that produce the most jobs. He implied that we should reduce our investment in the liberal arts because liberal-arts degrees don't correlate well with job creation. Three days later, at the unveiling of the iPad 2, Steve Jobs said: "It's in Apple's DNA that technology alone is not enough—it's technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our heart sing, and nowhere is that more true than in these post-PC devices"
Do you think governments need to spend more on improving education in disciplines that produce more jobs, such as engineering? Or, do you have a different opinion?

Looking forward to your views.

RTIS: New Final Year Project Idea

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 10:33 PM PDT

RTIS can be a great final year engineering project idea for those who want to work on GPS based systems. The RTIS has been developed by IIT-Kanpur, but it can very well be your project.

The overall idea is as follows -

1. Install GPS Based modules on trains.
2. The GPS modules will communicate with satellite.
3. The data sent by these modules will be processed by a central server and output following information -

1. Train Status
2. Train Location
3. Speed
4. Arrival Time
5. Delay

and other information.

What say?
