DAC for 1 - 5V Signal

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 05:11 PM PST

Hey there CE members!

I'm currently building and coding up my final project for my Electrical Technology class and I'm making a PID controller using a PIC18F452. I want to use a DAC to convert the final 8 bit value to a 1 to 5 volt signal which I will then convert to a 4 - 20mA signal.

At the moment I have a DAC0808 chip which I'm having a little trouble with wiring. I also have access to a MAX522 which I can use on SPI.

The trouble I'm having with the DAC0808 is the Io, Vee, and Vref- pins. I think that the Io pin is where my output voltage will be taken from, but as to the Vee and Vref- pins I'm totally lost.

Another question I have is will I be able to get a 1 to 5 volt signal out of either of these, or will I have to use a 0 to 5 volt signal. I'd prefer to use the DAC0808 to the the SPI chip for now, but any other suggestions on other chips that are available would be a big help!

Latest Trend In Electronics: Powerful Components That Consume Lesser Power

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 10:37 AM PST

Consumer electronics is rapidly advancing towards development & design of smarter gadgets which are smaller in size. We've already advanced from a room size computer to handheld devices which are multiple times more powerful than the first few computers. This advancement in the world of electronics, in my opinion, has been made possible because of the development of powerful and smarter components that consume lesser power.

Take the Tablets, for example. For me, they are rapidly advancing towards replacing the laptops and we've already been successful in removing the physical keyboards with touchscreens. This was made possible because engineers were able to develop power storages in smaller sizes. The iPad 2 is just 8.8mm thick and yet, it delivers close to 10 hours of battery life.

Do you think this qualifies as the latest trend in electronics? I believe most of the innovation today is based on the development of miniature power sources. Because if we don't develop smaller power sources - we can't expect lot of advancement in design and development of components.

Your take on this, please?
