Generator over Fluxing Relay (24G)

Posted: 01 Jan 2011 11:06 AM PST

Generator over Fluxing Relay (24G)

-The relay measures the ratio of voltage to frequency (V/Hz) as this ratio is proportional to the flux-density level of the electromagnetic machine.

-Over Fluxing (Over Excitation) may be occur when a generator is on an isolated operation with the AVR in service and the generator speed decreasing from the synchronous speed.
-Over Fluxing may also be occurring when the utility system frequency decreases to a low value by any reason.

There are two sets of the V/Hz relays are provided for Generator Protection:-
A) Relay 24G (#2) for alarm
A definite time element #2 of the relay will be used to provide an alarm.

B) Relay 24G (#1 & INV) for trip
Operation of the relay 24G will trip the switchyard breaker.
An inverse time element of the relay will be used to provide a trip contact and a definite time element #1 is also used to further shape the protection curves.

Data for setting calculations

Short-time V/Hz withstand level at full load -----120%
Continuous V/Hz withstand level at full load-----105%
AVR V/Hz limiter setting -----------------------------105%

Setting of generator V/Hz alarm relay 24G (#2)
1)V/Hz alarm setting
Setting < continuous V/Hz withstand level at full load = 105 %

2)V/Hz alarm delay
Setting = 30 cycles (0.6 Sec.)

Setting of generator V/Hz alarm relay 24G (INV)
1) V/Hz trip setting for inverse time element
Setting = 107 %

2) V/Hz Reset rate for inverse time element
Reset rate = Practical recommendation is minimum setpoint of the relay
Setting = 1 Sec.

NOTE!! "If the generator is synchronized immediately after tripping by V/Hz relay operation, the generator will be damaged under V/Hz condition before limitation value. "

Setting of generator V/Hz alarm relay 24G (#1)
1)V/Hz alarm setting
Setting < short V/Hz withstand level at full load = 120 %

2)V/Hz alarm delay
Setting = 50 cycles (1 Sec.)

Hey guys,
Today i found a really cool feature of wiki pages.
Many of CEans may know it. But this post is for those who don't know.I am sure they will find it quite interesting.
Guys Do you know we can create our own book using wiki pages and then download them as ODT or PDF file.
Even we can save any web page in pdf form.
Its really cool..
Do try it.

Every link , Every bookmark will be very well managed in the downloaded PDF.

In every wiki page, just see the left column and you will find "Export/Print"
Click on it and rest you will see yourself.

Enjoy reading guys.
Hope this post may help some.

Suggestions for Freshers!

Posted: 01 Jan 2011 08:07 AM PST

We have lot of CEans in the Corporate field working in various companies with different work cultures. This is the time, the freshers are getting jobs and in a short while going to join the companies. And as a fresher, I am eager to know some thing about the Corporate people, Corporate politics and all. I have a quite couple of questions and will post them here. I hope our Experienced CEans may reply well. And freshers, you may also ask your doubts here. So that we can be careful.

1) If the team leader goes with the wrong decision, what should we do?

A) Telling/Informing the leader that the decision was incorrect,
B) Just obeying to him/her and doing our work,
C) Telling to the team members that leader's decision was incorrect,
D) Informing the Manger that the team leader was wrong.

2) If the Manger was playing silly/stupid jokes, what should we do?

A) Do laughing with him/her,
B) Ask Manger to stop those,
C) Simply do our work,
D) Do Search for another job.

"Trinitramid" N(NO2)3 will boost rocket fuels in environment friendly way - KTH

Posted: 01 Jan 2011 06:04 AM PST

The scientists at The Royal Institute Of Technology have discovered a new molecule composed of oxygen and nitrogen only that can give a huge boost to the conventional rocket fuels. The discovery was made while the scientists were studying other chemical compounds.

If the efficiency of the fuel improves by 10 percent, the rocket payload capacity can almost double. At present every rocket launch equals emissions of 550 tonnes of concentrated HCL in atmosphere.

The stability of the molecule is now being studied. If proved stable, this discovery can led to tremendous improvements in the satellite rocket launch procedures.

What are the three laws of Robotics By Isaac Asimov?

Posted: 01 Jan 2011 02:06 AM PST

Have you heard about the term called, Asimov's "The Three Laws" of Robotics.

These laws are a set of three rules written by sci-fi author Isaac Asimov and later expanded upon. The rules are introduced in his 1942 short story Runaround although they were foreshadowed in a few earlier stories.

The Laws are as follows:

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Later on they went to add more laws in the series.

Fourth Law in Icarus's Way is:

"A robot must establish its identity as a robot in all cases."

Fourth Law in Foundation's Friends:

"A robot must reproduce. As long as such reproduction does not interfere with the First or Second or Third Law."

Fifth Law of robotics:
"A robot must know it is a robot."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I found this information amusing and so I thought I should share it with CEans.

PR2 Robot - Fetches Beer from the Refrigerator

Posted: 01 Jan 2011 01:25 AM PST

One day, the roboticists at Willow Garage were thirsty, so they decided to teach their quick-learning PR2 robot a few tricks.
PR2 already knew how to fold laundry and play pool but now it is much more useful. When you want a beer, you just have to open a web interface, choose your preferred brew, and click the "Beer Me" button. The PR2 opens the refrigerator, scans its contents using image recognition software and retrieves a bottle of the correct kind, then brings it back to you. It can open the bottle as well. I want one (right now). Watch a video of it in action here.

This is just so cool! :)

Meet the World's Youngest CEO - Suhas Gopinath

Posted: 31 Dec 2010 11:55 PM PST

When 14-year-old Suhas Gopinath started Globals Inc ten years ago from a cyber cafe in Bengaluru, he didn't know that he had become the youngest CEO in the world.

Today, Globals is a multi-million dollar company with offices in the United States, India, Canada, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Australia, Singapore and the Middle East and has 100 employees in India and 56 abroad.

Among the several honors that have been bestowed upon this young man, the most prestigious is the invitation to be a member of the Board of the ICT Advisory Council of the World Bank..
In 2007, the European Parliament and International Association for Human Values conferred 'Young Achiever Award' on him. He was also invited to address the European Parliament and other business dignitaries assembled in the EU Parliament. He is also recognised as one of the 'Young Global Leaders' for 2008-2009 by the prestigious World Economic Forum.
Suhas is the youngest member ever in the World Economic Forum's history. The other members include the Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, Hollywood star Leonardo Di Caprio, musician A R Rahman, Prince of Brunei, etc.
In this interview from his office in Bengaluru, Suhas Gopinath talks about his decade long journey and his dreams for the future.

Suhas Gopinath with former President APJ Abdul Kalam

On his childhood:

I come from a middle class family. My father worked as a scientist for the Indian Army. I used to study in the Air Force school in Bengaluru.
As a child, I was more interested in animals and veterinary science. But when I saw my friends who had home computers talk about it, I had this urge to learn and talk in their wave length.
But we didn't have a computer at home. In those days, computers were very expensive and we couldn't afford one.
So, what I did was, I located an Internet cafe near my house. With my modest monthly pocket money of Rs 15, I couldn't afford to surf the net every day.
I noticed that the shop was closed in the afternoon from 1 PM to 4 PM. So, I offered to open the shop for him after my school hours and take care of the customers.
In the bargain, he let me browse the net for free. That was the first business deal of my life and it turned out to be a successful one.

Suhas with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates

On building websites using open source technology:

Once I got the chance to manage the shop and browse the net, I started building websites. It became my passion in no time.
I got hooked to open source technology after I started looking for e-books on how to build websites. They were not available as they were created in propriety sources.
So, I started using open source to build websites.
On getting the first contract to build a website
There is a freelance marketplace on the web where I could register and offer my services to build websites. I registered myself there as a website builder.
The first website I had to do was free of cost as I had no references. It was for a company in New York.
My first income was $100 when I was 13 for building another website but I didn't have a bank account. so, I told my father that I built a website and got paid for it.
I was not excited to get the money because money was not a factor that drew me to it. It was the passion for technology that attracted me. I used to build websites free of cost also. I was only a 9th standard student.
After that, I built my own portal and called it Coolhindustan.com. It was focused on NRIs. It was a portal where I wanted to showcase my skills.
After that, many companies approached me to be their web designer.

Suhas Gopinath speaking to students' at a conference in Austria

On buying his first computer

When I was in the 9th standard itself, I had made enough money to buy a computer for myself. At that time, my brother was studying engineering and my father thought he needed a computer.
In no time, I also bought one for myself. But we didn't have a net connection at home.
My spending hours in the net cafe working on websites did affect my studies. I spent the entire summer vacation after the 9th standard in the cafe.
On rejecting a job offer from the US
When I was 14, Network Solutions offered me a part-time job in the US and they said they would sponsor my education in the US. I rejected the offer because that was the time I had read a story about Bill Gates and how he started Microsoft.
I thought it was more fun to have your own company. Many US companies used to tell me that I didn't even have a moustache and they felt insecure taking my services. They used to connect my ability with my age and academic qualifications.
So, I wanted to start my own company and show the world that age and academic qualifications are immaterial. I decided then that when I started a company, I would recruit only youngsters and I would not ask for their academic qualifications and marks cards. I follow that in my company.
