7 Segment Display Help

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 09:05 AM PDT

Hi all,

I am designing a four digit 7 segment display just using IC 74LS90 decade counter and 74LS47 BCD to 7 segment driver. My question is how to link the 74LS90 decade counter together so that the four 7 segment display will show me the result?

What's it like being an engineer?

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 08:08 AM PDT

At CE, we talk a lot about engineering. In fact we talk only about engineering.

If you were asked by someone a question such as: "What's it like being an engineer?",
what would your reply be?

I must admit I will be stumped. It's easy enough to tell someone what I do as an engineer, but 'being one' is a very different matter.

It is much like when, asking a single child, "What it was like being an only child?"
To which the the obvious response should be "I don't know, I've never been anything else".

Share your thoughts people :)

Is Engineering Art or Science?

....or neither?

See this video. A rather funny take on the topic.

But seriously, let your opinions flow in..

Civil Engineers do great things

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 07:48 AM PDT

Source: Civil Engineers Do Great Things, Whether People Realize it or Not! «

We as engineers absolutely do great things! I'll speak specifically about civil engineers in this post because that is my background. Wikipedia defines civil engineering as a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works such as bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings.
So basically, what they are saying is civil engineers design, or at least contribute to the design, of just about everything and anything you see when you walk outdoors, right? Buildings, roadways, dams, traffic signals, traffic signs, storm water ponds and catch basins, dams, utilities, curbs, sidewalks….stop me at anytime….
I think you get the picture. How many objects that we come in contact with each day are designed by civil engineers? A lot! What we do is so important to everyday society; however people rarely recognize it because they take all of these things for granted.

This post was spurred on by a seminar I saw recently on the destruction caused in Haiti by the recent earthquake. So many buildings, roadways, utility systems and other structures were destroyed. In fact every single one of the government buildings were damaged or destroyed. Of course, I am placing no blame on the civil engineers in Haiti, these structures were built so long ago that the Haitians just constructed these items with whatever materials they had available.
Occurrences like what happened in Haiti really show you how important our work is. If we fail, people can die and we can lose our license and even go to jail. If we succeed, everything is normal……
I salute all of you engineers out there who work long hours to meet stressful project deadlines and in doing so greatly improve the lives of people all over the world.
I leave you with the following excerpt from a speech made by Herbert C. Hoover, Engineer and 31st President of the United States:
Engineering is a great profession. There is the fascination of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realization in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings jobs and homes to men. Then it elevates the standards of living and ads to the comforts of life. That is the engineer's high privilege.

The great liability of the engineer compared to men of other professions is that his works are out in the open where all can see them. His acts, step by step, are in hard substance. He cannot bury his mistakes in the grave like the doctors. He cannot argue them into thin air or blame the judge like the lawyers. He cannot, like the architects, cover his failures with trees and vines. He cannot, like the politicians, screen his shortcomings by blaming his opponents and hope that the people will forget.

On the other hand, unlike the doctor, his is not a life among the weak. Unlike the soldier, destruction is not his purpose. Unlike the lawyer, quarrels are not his daily bread. To the engineer falls the job of clothing the bare bones of science with life, comfort, and hope. No doubt as years go by people forget which engineer did it, even if they ever knew. Or some politician puts his name on it. Or they credit it to some promoter who used other people's money with which to finance it. But the engineer himself looks back at the unending stream of goodness which flows from his successes with satisfactions that few professions may know.

I know this may be a biased crowd, but are we as engineers under-appreciated for what we do?

Open Circuit Remotely

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 04:58 AM PDT

Hi All,

I am working on one project need your help.

let me make it simple. since, you may not be interested in long story.

I have a circuit its working fine no issues but i want to OPEN this circuit remotely to stop the flow of current. no more current no more work.

what i will do, i will cut the wire and put Magnet in b/w the connection. so, in normal condition circuit is closed North South pole will make connection.

Now, For Ssecurity reasons, I want to open circuit REMOTELY !!! i just want this magnetic connection to break.
please tell me how is this possible and what best range we can have to achieve the result.

Thanks

Why are Imagineers so cool?

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 04:27 AM PDT

"Technical Wizards" are what they called. (I love that term :cean:)

Walt Disney coined the term *Imagineer* and it has stuck with the Engineers are Disney ever since.

Walt Disney Imagineering is the design and development arm of The Walt Disney Company, responsible for the creation and construction of Disney theme parks worldwide.

Literally speaking: An Imagineer is somebody who has a creative imagination and is able to put it to practical use, e.g. in design of engineering projects.

Inside It - MPFI

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 03:48 AM PDT

MPFI stands for Multi Point Fuel Injection
p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } This is a type of Petrol Injection System in which the carburettor is replaced by Petrol Injection to inject the fuel in the intake manifold. There it mixes with air stream in an atomized form.
The amount of mixture that enters the intake manifold in controlled by throttle valves.
MPFI means that the fuel is injected from more than one injector.

How To Have Faith In Yourself?

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 11:09 PM PDT

It's a common advise to have a faith in yourself. But having a faith in oneself is one of the most difficult and misunderstood things. So, how can one really go about having a faith in him/her self?

I've been thinking about it for the past few minutes and decided to put my thoughts in this post. I think there are few realizations one must make to restore faith in yourself.

1. You can't change your past:

Unless some CEan invents a time machine, none of us will be able to change our past. You didn't pay attention in school, didn't score good marks, did not participate in extra-curricular activities, killed time, didn't make good friends, developed bad habits and whatever that you sometimes think you shouldn't have done. Why not accept the fact that what's been done is done and there's no way it can be changed?

Well, the point is obvious but not many accept this simple fact - past cannot be changed. There are people who perpetually keep blaming their past for their present situation. This blaming doesn't do any good except ruining your present which in turn ruins your immediate future. Think about it.

What's been done, is done. Nothing can be done about it. Accept it.

2. Making the most out of present.

Having realized that nothing can be done about the past, it's time to understand that we cannot let the past take control of our present. Lot of people physically exist in present but their minds are always in the past. A serious mistake, if you ask me.

It's common sense. You must learn to extract the MOST out of your present. Look, what you do today is going to be responsible for your future. Believing in yourself is mostly about living in present, thinking in present and keeping an eye on the future.

You lose believe in yourself when you think you aren't in control of anything - the things you cannot change [past]. But we always forget that we CAN BE in control of our future - and it's determined by our actions today. If you repeat this thought in your mind every-day; it will restore faith in yourself.

Let me explain with an example: If you're an engineering student worried about getting a job; think about what's the cause of your worries. Is it the fear that you'll get rejected because of your poor marks in engineering exams? Or something else? Then think what can you do at present to fix that problem? Can you master your engineering knowledge over the next two months if you start preparing today? Challenge yourself! Then, just do it!

3. The fact that you are 'nobody' yet.

I don't mean to disrespect you but the point is, you shouldn't worry about failure. Probably, the only people know you are your neighbors & relatives who are very limited in numbers. So if you fail in anything - it'll be known to only the limited people around you. Why make them more important than they really are? Don't let their words disturb you.

The biggest criticism you should take seriously should come from within you. Your inner criticism should act as a fire in steam engine - to power you and not to depress you. Have some realistic expectations from yourself and do something about it. If you fail, let the critic inside you tell you what you did wrong.

Don't be afraid of failures. People will say good/bad things no matter what you do. I personally have experienced this throughout my career as an entrepreneur. The people who once blamed you will applaud you for your achievements. Yes, it's hard, but it has to be accepted.

Let the fact "You're Nobody" act as a rocket launcher for you to be "The One".

4. Have a goal:

I don't have enough words to describe how important it is to have a goal for yourself in restoring your faith. Your goal can be anything - but you MUST put a strict time-limit to it. Once that is done, let all the negative and positive powers drive you towards it. You will feel fantastic about yourself. You won't be lazy anymore. You will love yourself and start believing in yourself.

For example, your goal could be to top the next college exam or crack the next company visiting your campus for recruitment. Now, assuming you've 15 days time limit to achieve the goal; you can setup a strict schedule for yourself. First thing is figuring out what's needed and making a plan without wasting lot of time on it. Second thing is to sacrifice the things you love doing the most like "wasting time on Facebook". Third thing is to start acting on your plan WITHOUT thinking about the outcome. Your focus should be on preparation and the plan you've set for yourself. Miss all those sporting events, miss all those friend parties and everything. Enjoy working on your plan, enjoy what you're doing and do your best making the most out of present.

99% of the times, the outcome will be pleasantly surprising.

5. You're awesome:

No matter how you've done so far in life, you're still awesome and better than thousands of others. It's a fact and you know it. You just did not pay attention to it. All you have to do is focus on becoming more awesome.

The crux of all of the above is that you should not waste your time in focusing on things you can't control or are negative. Having a faith in yourself is all about choice.

PS: I've just posted a draft without proof-reading it before posting. Ignore the mistakes, please. :)

Still a Mystery: Why was web traffic redirected to China?

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 10:56 PM PDT

Six months after Web traffic involving popular U.S. sites and e-mail from computers around the globe was re-directed to Chinese servers unnecessarily, Internet watchers are trying to figure out why it happened and how to prevent future mishaps.

The first situation happened on 24th March this year, when workers at network operation centers in various parts of the world noticed that traffic to popular sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and about 20 or 30 others was being redirected to servers in China as a result of traffic interception via one of the main DNS root servers.

The mystery still continues.

Google Robot Cars

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 10:47 PM PDT

Google has been testing self-driving cars on roads in California and so far they've avoided everything but a minor fender bender caused by a human-driven car.

Google's robot car is equipped with artificial-intelligence software.

Rotating sensor on its roof : which can scan more than 200 feet in all directions to create a 3D map of the car's environs

A video camera mounted behind the windshield : which helps the navigation system spot pedestrians, bicyclists, and traffic lights

Three radar devices on the front bumper, and one in the back; and a sensor on one of the wheels: that allows the system to determine the car's position on the 3D map.

The car also features a GPS device and a motion sensor.

The car follows a route programmed into the GPS system, and it can be instructed to drive cautiously, or more aggressively.

Engineers say robot cars aren't susceptible to drowsiness or driving under the influence, and that eventually they might allow for more cars on the road, because they can drive closer to other vehicles, and less fuel consumption, because their safety would allow them to be made lighter, with less defensive armor.

The man behind the project, Sebastian Thrun, a Google engineer and co-inventor of Google's Street View mapping project, was also behind the autonomous auto that won the $2 million prize in the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency's 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, a contest to see if a driver less vehicle could successfully navigate nearly 150 miles in the California desert.
