1 Hz square wave generator

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 01:46 PM PDT

Hi all,
I am making a Digital Clock. For this purpose, I need a 1 Hz signal to insert as a Clock for 'Seconds' portion of my circuit. How to create 1 Hz ? I tried 555 timer, but practically I am not getting exact 1Hz. Now I decide to make Crystal Oscillator. I have a 32.768 kHz Quartz Crystal. I have searched Internet for making the circuit. But I cannot simulate anyone of them in 'Proteus ISIS'. I want to have this 32.768kHz and then divide it using Counter(s) to have exact 1Hz signal. Now what to do? Anyone please help me with making the Crystal Oscillator Circuit and needed formulae.
Thanks.

Buy IDFC infrastructure bonds to save tax under 80CCF

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 10:17 AM PDT

Hi All,

Thought of sharing this information with working professionals. As most of us are already aware of the new tax deduction under Section 80CCF of Rs 20,000 for investments made into infrastructure bonds. What makes this deduction even more interesting is the fact that the deduction is over and above the Rs 1 lakh allowed under Section 80C.
IDFC has launched these infrastructure bonds. The issue opened for subscription on September 30, and will be closing on October 18th.
There are 4 types of infra bonds from IDFC:
1. Series 1: gives you interest of 8% payable annually.
2. Series 2 also gives you interest of 8% but the interest will keep getting reinvested into the bond.
3. Series 3 pays 7.5% interest annually and comes with a buyback option
4. Series 4 pays 7.5% interest which gets reinvested into the bond and comes with a buyback option as well.

Hey guys! New guy checkin' in

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 09:22 AM PDT

Hey guys!
My name's Solomon and I have been more focused around the IT and web development sector than bonafide engineering. In college, I was an engineering major until I decided I wanted to go to medical school-- so that has pretty much been the direction I have been moving toward lately.

Currently, I am working on a project called ZhoutIt that allows organizations to send use our API to send/receive text messages for free and users to post/search for parties, events, and other local based data via sms and web.

The reason why I joined CE? Hmm... I guess you can say, I feel that "engineers" (whether they be civil, computer, etc)-- shape the world. So even though I am not an engineering major anymore-- I still feel contacted to those who have made a strong career out of it. Anyway! Enough of the sappy crap!

Hope to meet you all!

Perception: Women Vs Men

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 03:11 AM PDT

Women Friends chatting in office.

Woman 1: I had a fine evening, how was yours?
Woman 2: it was a disaster. My husband came home, ate his dinner in three minutes and fell asleep in two minutes. How was yours?
Woman 1: Oh it was amazing! My husband came home and took me out to a romantic dinner. After dinner we walked for an hour. When we came home he lit the candles around the house and afterwards talked for an hour. It was like a fairytale!

At the same time, their husbands are talking at work.

Husband 1: How was your evening?
Husband 2: Great. I came home, dinner was on the table, I ate and fell asleep. It was great! What about you?
Husband 1: It was horrible. I came home, there's no dinner because they cut the electricity because I hadn't paid the bill; so I had to take my wife out to dinner which was so expensive that I didn't have money left for a cab. We had to walk home which took an hour; and when we got home remember there was no electricity so I had to light candles all over the house! After all, I was so aggravated that I couldn't fall asleep and my wife was jabbering away for another hour!

Know Your CEan - AbraKaDabra

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 02:09 AM PDT

CEan- AbraKaDabra doesn't require any introduction. She is one of the young budding engineer at CE who is very actively involved in managing CE activity. She is a helping hand to administrator and moderators and working as one of the Editor @ CE. Here I got a chance to Tete-e-Tete with Ankita Katdare AKA AbraKaDabra
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CB: Ankita, you are a crazy computer engineer and we all know that you always keep yourself busy in exploring new development world. Tell us more about you.
AKD: First of all, hello CEans and thank you to all. It's an honor to be featured on the KYCEan. I find it really very tough to speak about myself (That’s the reason why I have ignored the “About Me” section on my blog for ages)

I am a budding engineer in my last teen year. I am an optimistic dreamer. I love the pace at which the world is progressing. And I want to be a significant part of it.

CB: “Abra Ka Dabra”. We all are well versed with this name. What were your thoughts of keeping this name for CE-Editor?
AKD: It’s a funny story. I was 15 and reading. I was (and still am) a big Harry Potter Series fan. Magic was all over the books. The quotes like ‘magic is might’ were starting to affect my mind. I would sit and ponder about magic. Then I put my hands on some sci-fi books and started making imaginary connections between magic and reality. I thought everything that we have around us today would appear as magic to the 20th century people. I believed Science and Technology are itself the tools to create *magic* and that was the time when CE happened to me.

So, this name; Another peculiar reason to keep it is that, A and K are my initials. :D

CB: Why CE? Why not any other techno forum? What made you join CE-family?
AKD: I have seen the creation and growth of CE from day one. The way CE has been developed for a ‘wanna-be’ as well as a ‘been-there-done-that‘engineer is simply superb.

CB: You are one of the oldest members at CE (Joined in 2006) over a long period of time you were lost. What motivated you to become an active member again?
AKD: When I joined I was just out of school. I did not have a good sense of what it means to be an engineer. I wasn’t lost. I did not want to be ignorant. I was gathering my resources. I used to read posts here and loved the energy of our forum. But I rarely logged in to post because I thought I was dumb. :(

Now I know I was wrong. Like thousands of other CEans, I have found the real definition of an engineer through CE. :D
It motivates me daily.:D

CB: You are a computer engineer. 5 years from now where do you see yourself in IT field? Or as a techno geek you want to go in research field.
AKD: As I mentioned earlier I am fascinated by the technological development that human race is going through. I want to interact and work with the greatest engineers. I love the creative aspect of engineering. As a computer engineer I would love to work on an animation film, a civil mega structure (probably a bridge), a humanoid robot, a green electricity generation plant or some big machinery they use to make super cars. :D

CB: What else do you do apart from your studies and spending time on CE?
AKD: Quite a few things. I learn Japanese as a foreign language. I play piano and violin. (But it breaks my heart to say I haven’t touched it for about a year.) I love reading books – mostly non-fiction.

CB: You are a piano and Violin master and your brother is an awesome guiterst and had a great vocal. Didn't you think of starting a band? or you had participated in any?
AKD: I am not a master in any of those. I am still naïve. My brother sure has a great voice and has flair with the guitar. He is an ounce of inspiration for me. We play together a lot of times. But have not participated in any competition. I think we can plan something like that for an All Engineer Band or play something at the first CE World Meet. ;-)I hope that happens soon enough.

Quickies:

CB: Name as many CEans as you can in 10 seconds?
AKD: The_Big_K, Ash, English-Scared, CrazyBoy, Sahithi_Pallavi, Durga, Godfather, Gohm, CivilPrincess, Cooltwins, RajVerma, Goyal, silverscorpion, AJ, mohitkumar, Maro, cooldudeiet, Vik, optimysitx, leo, whatsinname, sam-from-hell, whiz-kid-aniket….I know I have run out of time! :o

CB: If you are allowed to go in past, thing you would like to change?
1. For you?
AKD: I would have started being active on CE a bit earlier.

2. For CE?
AKD: Nothing. It rocks the way it is.

3. For world?
AKD: I would have vanished the boundaries between nations and prevented mankind from fighting with each other.

CB: A moment you cannot forget in life?
AKD: It’s a hard to tell only one. Anyway, I am writing what comes to my mind first. It was the feeling of being airborne i.e. my first experience in the flight. It felt like a dream.

CB: What keeps CE different then other techno forums?
AKD: The members i.e. CEans. Members in the forum are the *life* of the forum. We all have seen people speak loads of good things about CE. We call the forum as our own. We are proud to be a part of it. We are bound by the common engineering spirit. Where else can I find that?

Twisters

CB: Your dream date?
AKD: 28th November. My birth date. I dream about it every year, all the time. I love gifts. ;-)

CB: One blooper at college life you would like to remember?
AKD: I have a bag full of embarrassing moments. And I would rather like to forget all of them. One of them is: I was forcibly put into a quiz contest at the college fest. I had no idea that my name was on the participants’ list. And my team was horrible too. We gave terrible answers and at last our score was below zero due to the negative marking. :mad:It was a disaster.

CB: Who's a better engineer, a married genius or an unmarried fanatic?
AKD: Without much thought - a married genius.

CB: If you designated as CE-Good Administrator for one day only, one thing you will like to do?
AKD: I would send free t-shirts to all the good and active CEans and urge them to spread the word.

CB: Any saying to todays engineers @ CE?
AKD: One has to look out for engineers - they begin with sewing machines and end up with the atomic bomb.
To all CEans, Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it.
At last, always be nice to engineers. Who knows - you might end up working for one.

Talk with Aziz Premji - What makes Indian tech education lose its shine?

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 01:37 AM PDT

Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro had to drop his education from Stanford at the age of 21 to build his company and he was able to continue his education even after 15 years through correspondence.
Recently he said, "If I was a young person today, I would still go to a good U.S. school. The Indian schools can be very narrow and technical: It's engineering. Foreign schools give you a broad experience with your engineering degree. The cultural experience I got in the U.S. was useful: It's expensive but it's worth it.

Which University in India will allow a 15 years back dropout to continue his/ her education from that semester? Majority of the western universities allow their dropouts to complete their education through correspondence. Such flexibilities, Intellectual climate, lifestyle, opportunities, free society etc continue to be the driving force behind getting an American education. Some of these students who returned to India after graduation were successful in tapping the unprecedented opportunities that exist in the country and made an entry in top Indian bellwethers list.

There are lots of emerging business opportunities in India and education is an integral part of countries growth. It is high time for us to analyze: what makes Indian tech education lose its shine?"

Yahoo Search Engine Overhaul

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 12:01 AM PDT

Yahoo has rolled out a new search experience, making its web search more streamlined and visual, improving its mobile search and adding a list of hot search topics to the Yahoo front page.

Now, when we search for entertainment or news-related topics, instead of a long list of results we'll get a box with vertical tabs, which gives us several different ways to examine the topic.

Furthermore, the upper right side of Yahoo's homepage now features a list of trending topics. Clicking on one of these will take you to the search results for that particular topic. Check it out for yourself. ;)

Green light for Ivanpah Solar Project

Posted: 07 Oct 2010 11:54 PM PDT

The company expects to start building the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generation System, which will have a capacity of 392 megawatts, later this year and complete the work in 2012.

The Ivanpah plant is one of nine large-scale solar projects working through the federal permitting process for building on public land. The BLM yesterday gave approval for two other solar projects to built on public lands, also in southern California.

It will use thousands of mirrors to reflect light onto centralized towers, which will use the heat from the sunlight to make steam. That steam is run though a turbine to turn a generator to make electricity.

eLegs - Robotic Legs for paraplegics

Posted: 07 Oct 2010 11:47 PM PDT

eLegs is an exoskeleton for wheel*chair users. It powers you up to get you standing and walking.

The battery-powered, rechargeable system includes a backpack-mounted controller, robotic legs with motorized hips and knee joints, and crutches that employ a gesture-based human-machine interface and sensors to observe the wearer's gestures and respond accordingly. Velcro straps, backpack-style clips, and shoulder straps secure eLegs to users over their clothing and everyday shoes.

Watch the video where: Amanda Boxtel stands and walks for the first time in 18 years using eLegs, a 45-pound wearable robotic exoskeleton aimed at getting paraplegics out of their wheelchairs and onto their feet. It's an amazing sight.

"To take my first step in the eLegs was just astounding," Boxtel says with tears in her eyes, "because I bent my knee for the first time in 18 years and I placed my heel on the ground. And then I transferred my weight. And then I took another step. And another one. And it was so natural, and that was what really gripped me."

The good news is that:
Berkeley Bionics CEO Eythor Bender says the company is hoping to make the eLegs system available for around $50,000--about half the cost of current high-end wheelchairs.
